The PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch will be some of the last consoles from Sony and Nintendo to include support for physical games, a format that players still continue to hold dearly based on ongoing market trends, including the release of premium and collector’s editions of games, according to new predictions shared by Mat Piscatella, Executive Director & Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana. Piscatella’s comments came in response to a post about the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Collector’s Edition, a physical version of the game for PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and PC from Limited Run Games that, while featuring a Lara Croft figure, pistols replica, soundtrack, and more, will not be offered via traditional retail channels for Xbox players. (All versions are already sold out at the time of this posting.)
Piscatella said:
- “Folks should probably just get used to this (no physical Xbox versions) across the market sooner rather than later.”
- “…give PS another gen, Nintendo another 2.”
- “[Nintendo might never abandon physical games] … Well the sun is going to swallow the Earth in 5 billion years so never is just simply not true.”
The original word from Piscatella:
Folks should probably just get used to this (no physical Xbox versions) across the market sooner rather than later. https://t.co/jKaxTteB36
