The Ryzen 7 9700X, one of the first desktop processors for consumers to leverage AMD’s new Zen 5 architecture, may be shipping with a higher TDP so it can outperform the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a Zen 4 CPU that features 3D V-Cache technology for what AMD has described as ultimate gaming performance, according to a new report. Featuring 8 cores and 16 threads, the Ryzen 7 9700X will be available to DIY customers and SI partners starting next month, joined by its three siblings: the Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen 9 9900X, and Ryzen 9 9950X, a new flagship that delivers a boost clock of up to 5.7 GHz out of the box.

From a report:

  • “…AMD has updated its partners with a possible spec change for the 8-core part. It’s being said that the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X might get a TDP of 120W which is almost 2x its current and official figure of 65W.”
  • “The chip features 8 cores, 16 threads, a base clock of 3.8 GHz, a boost clock of 5.5 GHz, 40 MB of cache, and is 100 MHz faster than AMD’s Ryzen 7 7700X based on the Zen 4 core architecture.”
  • “The AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU does feature a -700 MHz clock speed reduction when it comes to base clocks so it might be possible that AMD might be revaluating the CPU with a higher TDP to increase base, boost, or both clock speeds”

Specifications for the Ryzen 9000 Series, some of which will reportedly be changing:

AMD’s Donny Woligroski on why the Ryzen 7000X3D Series is still highly relevant:

Is [the 9950X] the fastest in gaming? It’s faster than the competition in our tests. X3D is still the king of the hill, but by a much smaller margin than typically between X3D and non-X3D. So a 7800X3D would, yes, be faster than 9700X, but maybe not by as much as you would expect.
