The Xbox Series, a fourth generation of Xbox consoles that Microsoft launched in 2020, including what is said to be the world’s most powerful video game console ever—the Xbox Series X—will be more difficult to find in some regions in the months ahead, according to a new report that echoes a claim from a tipster about how Microsoft will stop marketing consoles in the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East, and Africa) regions and, instead, turn its focus there on other aspects of the Xbox business, including cloud gaming, peripherals, and Game Pass. The rumor arrives on the heels of new sales estimates for May 2024 that show Xbox Series X|S in third place with 131,095 units sold, bringing its lifetime sales to 17.36 million units.
May 2024 console sales, followed by lifetime sales:
- PlayStation 5: 289,885 (24,306,640)
- Nintendo Switch: 136,494 (53,433,501)
- Xbox Series X|S: 131,095 (17,357,526)
- PlayStation 4: 918 (41,540,656)
From a report:
- “…Microsoft navigates a new financial year, which began in July. A new financial year…means new goals and potentially some strategy shifts.”
- “I haven’t been able to fully verify this, but the tipster claimed Microsoft will stop marketing Xbox consoles in certain markets in EMEA and focus only on Game Pass, cloud gaming, PC, and Xbox controllers.”
- “Microsoft has been struggling to sell Xbox Series S / X consoles in many countries across EMEA, and the tipster believes Microsoft will now allocate less console stock to Europe as a result.”
- “A few weeks after I received this tip, Xbox tweeted: ‘No console, no problem 🔥’ in a post on X about the new Xbox app for Fire TV sticks.”
