The Odyssey 3D, a new 4K gaming monitor that is said to deliver immersive, glasses-free 3D gaming with its several special technologies, including eye tracking and view mapping, is available to try at the Samsung booth during this week’s Gamescom 2024 event ahead of its official release, Samsung has announced. The new monitor, which will be available in 27- and 37-inch sizes, is being showcased alongside the Odyssey OLED G8, Odyssey Neo G9, and Odyssey G9, the latter of which features a 49-inch screen with 1000R curvature.
Samsung writes:
- “The Odyssey 3D’s innovative light field display (LFD) technology creates lifelike 3D images from 2D content by using a lenticular lens on the front panel.”
- “Combined with Eye Tracking and View Mapping technology, Odyssey 3D ensures an optimized 3D experience without the need for separate 3D glasses.”
- “Eye Tracking monitors the movement of both eyes using a built-in stereo camera, while View Mapping continuously adjusts the image to enhance depth perception.”
- “The Odyssey 3D can seamlessly switch between 2D and 3D modes based on the user’s preference. Offered in 27′ and 37′ sizes, it features a 4K resolution display, a rapid 1ms gray-to-gray(GTG) response time, and a high refresh rate of 165Hz, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted gameplay without any afterimages or interruptions.”
- “Additionally, the Odyssey 3D comes with an ergonomic design featuring a Height Adjustment Stand (HAS), tilt capabilities, FreeSync Premium, one DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports.”

I'd be interested if not for all the glasses free stuff that's been announced over the last few years never gets to market or when it does, it costs a lot. I wouldn't be surprised that if this 37" ends up in the $2000-$3000 range but I'd like to be wrong.

Nope.
I mean it worked very well for the Nintendo 3DS (especially the New 3DS with the eye-tracking), but with a display of this size and scale? I dunno about that.
My friend bought a 77" LG C1 for $2200, and another friend got a 77" C2 for $1500! There's no way in f*ck any company will be able to sell me a 37" display for 2-3 grand. The 3D tech certainly ain't worth that. I'd would much rather have an OLED than a 3D LCD.

"One thing that’s missing is the price. We’ve reached out to Samsung to see if pricing information is available, but if Acer’s products (and the historical pricing on Samsung’s Odyssey lineup) are any indication, the Odyssey 3D offerings won’t come cheap."

3D tech really needs a glasses free experience to exit the realm of "niche" and enter more mainstream use...
...but it really depends on how good it is. I have a difficult time picturing this being good enough to not just be a gimmick.
But the proof will be in the pudding.
It was neat on the 3DS, but you couldn’t leave it on full time. A gimmick, a very cool one and it definitely dazzled for about the first 30 minutes of each game… then you turned it off.
It caused me eye strain and hella eye fatigue. That was the main reason why I couldn't use it for very long. It was waaay better on the New 3DS, which also had eye tracking so that you didn't have to hold the 3DS and your head in the exact position where the 3D effect would work with your eyes. Honestly that was one of the most annoying things about the Old 3DS. Another issue with turning on the 3D on the Old 3DS was that it caused the framerate to drop in some games.
Usually it was the first-party Nintendo games that used the 3D effect the best, and with some of those games the 3D would even help the gameplay, and you could leave it on all the time. I don't have enough experience with the New 3DS to tell if the improved 3D would stop causing me eye strain and eye fatigue. But the 3D on the New 3DS was definitely much improved.
I wear glasses and contact lenses, and the 3D effect on the 3DS would only really look proper when I was using my contacts. Didn't work as well when I was using my glasses. I had a similar issue with 3D HDTVs.

Pretty cool. I still periodically checkup on stuff like this, but if it launches at all it's usually ridiculously overpriced now. The other catch is how they implement it since NV dropped driver support after introducing the RTX 30 series (there was some kind of hardware change). On that note, I think it was winter 2023/2024 where I fired up my old 2080 Ti and after a good amount of work successfully shoehorned the last driver(s) onto a spare rig and fired up Metro and some other games on my old Asus 27" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync 3D display. It was some work to make it all functional but fun for a bit.

Eye-tracking is key, as anyone who has used first-version 3DS and the later New 3DS can attest to. Without the eye tracking you had to be holding the system at the right position and distance constantly, which is hard to do with a handheld system. The New 3DS had eye-tracking and fixed that issue. And the overall 3D effect was much better than on the old 3DS on top of that. I imagine that for this Samsung monitor, without eye-tracking you would have keep your head at exactly the right distance, angle, and position for the 3D to work. That would be annoying.
