The PS5 Pro, an updated version of the 2020 video game console that is set to deliver several improvements over the original model, including an upgraded GPU, more powerful ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling via PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is priced at $699.99 because Sony Interactive Entertainment has less competition to worry about these days, according to the latest thoughts shared by Piers Harding-Rolls, a games industry analyst at Ampere. Harding-Rolls’ comments come on the heels of a poll that suggest Sony should have went for a lower price, however, with only 14% of respondents saying that they will be buying the system.
Harding-Rolls said:
- “…a lack of direct competitor to its mid-cycle upgrade compared to last generation (where Microsoft was preparing the Xbox One X).”
- “The lack of competition means it is an easier decision for Sony to run with a higher price point to protect its existing margins.”
- “For most prospective PS5 consumers, the standard edition will represent the value sweet spot.”
