PC owners working with AI large language models (LLM) may want to watch for the PM9E1 as Samsung starts mass production. The PM9E1 has been designed with AI workloads in mind and is said to be capable of transferring a 14 GB LLM file in under one second. Samsung has also said that it allows for 50% more battery life making it an optimal choice for mobile devices performing AI tasks using its in-house developed 5 nm controller paired with 8th-gen V-NAND memory.

“Built on its in-house 5-nanometer (nm)-based controller and eighth-generation V-NAND (V8) technology, the PM9E1 will provide powerful performance and enhanced power efficiency, making it an optimal solution for on-device AI PCs.”

The 8-channel PCIe Gen 5.0 drive is capable of sequential read/write speeds up to 14.5 GB/s and 13 GB/s respectively, making it a fast and efficient means of storage for just about any device that supports the PCIe 5.0 interface. Samsung has said that the PM9E1 will be available in 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacities. Support for Security Protocol and Data Model (SPDM) v1.2 is included which provides features such as firmware tampering attestation, device authentication, and secure channel technology. As Samsung starts mass production for the PM9E1, it has not revealed pricing nor a release date but has said this marks the beginning of its plans to expand its SSD products. This could potentially mean other products using the new 5 nm controller are in the works such as its popular PRO/EVO lineups.

Per Press Release:

  • “Our PM9E1 integrated with a 5nm controller delivers industry-leading power efficiency and utmost performance validated by our key partners,” said YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics.
  • “In the rapidly growing on-device AI era, Samsung’s PM9E1 will offer a robust foundation for global customers to effectively plan their AI portfolios.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
