Update: Uematsu is now claiming that he isn’t retiring from video game music work, but that he’s going to “cut back” on them due to time constraints, clarifying that he’s still interested in composing smaller projects, such as theme songs.

Original story: Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary Japanese composer best known for creating the soundtracks behind many of the Final Fantasy games, including 1994’s Final Fantasy VI and 1997’s Final Fantasy VII, will no longer be making any more video game music, according to a new message that the musician shared with fans this week, one in which he confirms FANTASIAN Neo Dimension will mark his “final project as a composer of video game music.” Uematsu, who is partially famed for being self-taught, originally joined Square in 1986, where he defined the sound of Final Fantasy for nearly two decades before switching to freelance work. Uematsu’s statement, including a trailer for FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, can be found below.

The father of FINAL FANTASY, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and renowned composer Nobuo Uematsu return to deliver an original RPG story with FANTASIAN Neo Dimension. Experience an enhanced version of FANTASIAN, initially released for Apple Arcade in 2021, with brand-new features, including English and Japanese voiceovers and an additional difficulty option. PS5, Xbox Series X and PC versions of the game also offer 4K support.
