A new wave of 21:9 OLED displays is coming as LG unveils its UltraGear GX9 lineup featuring its new bendable 45-inch model. The LG UltraGear 45GX990A is the flagship model for the GX9 series and according to LG’s press release will receive three awards at its official unveiling at CES 2025. LG is rolling out three models for the UltraGear GX9 series that comprise with launch of the 45GX990A, 45GX950A, and 39GX90SA. All three share a number of similarities with a 21:9 aspect ratio, OLED panels, and USB Type C ports.

Per LG Press Release:

“To ensure maximum gaming immersion, all UltraGear GX9 series models feature curved display panels employing LG’s advanced WOLED technology. These screens offer high brightness, true blacks, stunning colors and optimized curvature; a combination that brings games to life and draws users deeper into the exhilarating action of their favorite titles. Certified for low blue light emissions, the GX9 series provides a more comfortable experience, reducing eye strain during extended gaming sessions. In addition, LG’s Anti-Glare & Low Reflection (AGLR) coating minimizes screen reflections and glare, making it easier for gamers to see everything that’s happening on screen, even in brighter rooms.”

The 45-inch models support HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, and USB Type C with 90W PD, with a 5K2K resolution of 5,120 x 2,160 offering 125 PPI. Additionally, they feature dual-mode support for 21:9 or 16:9 aspect ratios for 39, 34, and 27-inch picture sizes. The 45GX990A is the world’s first bendable OLED 45″ 5K2K display with dual mode. It can be adjusted to a flat orientation or bend to a 900R curvature. The 45GX950A is the world’s first 45″ 5K2K display with 800R curvature and DisplayPort 2.1 and uses RGWB subpixel layout for improved text readability. Both displays are certified for NVIDIA G-SYNC and AMD FreeSync Pro to provide smoother gameplay.

The 39-inch 39GX90SA bridges the gap between a gaming monitor and LG’s popular 42-inch C-series smart televisions, with its WebOS that provides access to streaming services. A key difference is its 21:9 AR and 800R curvature. As LG unveils its GX9 lineup there are a number of details lacking but will likely be revealed at CES 25. Refresh rates and brightness ratings for the above displays are missing as are pricing. Details for the 39GX90SA are sparse with no mention of what types of VRR support or HDR types are included and what display connections it has.

Per LG Press Release:

“The UltraGear GX9 series sets a new standard for OLED gaming monitors, combining groundbreaking display technology with smart features that expand and enhance the user experience,” said YS Lee, vice president and head of the IT Business Unit, LG Media Entertainment Solution Company. “From the world’s first 5K2K OLED gaming monitors with second-generation Dual-Mode to smart gaming monitors with built-in webOS, the GX9 lineup pushes the boundaries to deliver maximum value and enjoyment for our customers.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
