The Nintendo Switch 2, a sequel to the best-selling hybrid video game console that Nintendo plans to launch in 2025, will deliver gameplay experiences that come a little closer to those that are traditionally reserved for the PC, according to a new patent that was published today that can confirm its new controllers—a new generation of Joy-Con—will, among other things, include a “sensor for mouse operation.”

“This input device comprises a front surface, an upper surface, a first side surface, a second side surface, a direction input unit, a first upper surface button, and a sensor for mouse operation,” reads an abstract of the patent, confirming that the latest iteration of Nintendo’s detachable controller was partially inspired by what many would consider to be the ideal peripheral for games that include first-person shooters.

“The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface,” the abstract goes on to explain, accompanied by a diagram of the new Joy-Con’s buttons, which can be found below.

“For more details on Nintendo Switch 2, please tune in for the ‘Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 4.2.2025,’ which will air on Wednesday, April 2,” reads an update to the original announcement for the hybrid console that Nintendo first published on January 16.

“Nintendo Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games,” Nintendo noted. “Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.”
