Sorry, GTA fans but Rockstar Games has announced that the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI is going to be a bit further out. Speculation and official word regarding when GTA VI would actually launch have been all over the map for a number of years. This game of cat and mouse has left fans wondering if Rockstar will ever release the next installment, given the last game hit 3rd-gen consoles back in 2013, and was then followed by a PC release in 2015. However, interestingly enough, the latest release date does align with a rumor from spring 2024. That rumor claimed that Rockstar’s updated return-to-office policy could result in a potential delay leading to a Spring 2026 release, and now, at least in terms of a new date, it’s looking like that is the case.

Rockstar Games has issued a statement explaining that it wants to ensure it can deliver the game at a quality level fans are expecting. Considering the billions expected in sales, this is probably a good thing, as the game could be the biggest hit of the decade if all the hype is to be believed. The irony is that this seemingly shell game strategy has left rival game publishers continually having to re-evaluate their own release schedules in an effort to avoid directly competing with the game that is expected to snatch up funds from gamers on an epic level at launch. Meanwhile, the new release date for Grand Theft Auto VI is May 26, 2026.

Official Statement (per Rockstar Games):

“Hi everyone,

Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.

We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.

Sincerely,
Rockstar Games”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
