Multiple industry insiders are claiming that 4A Games could at long last reveal the next entry in the Metro franchise. An official announcement could happen as early as this week for what has been referred to as Metro 2039. If accurate, this would be 4A Games’ direct follow-up to 2019’s Metro Exodus, which saw Artyom and his fellow survivors make their way out of the underground tunnels back to the surface. This latest rumor comes via Jez Corden as a pair of newly leaked development videos surfaced online over the weekend.

As spotted by DSOG, the following two videos are listed as Metro 2039 intro cutscene and basement cutscene. Rumors have also suggested this game will feature a new protagonist instead of Artyom, whose story was the main focus for the last three titles. However, it should also be noted that bonus DLC for previous games often included missions for other characters, such as Col. Miller and Sam (uncle), the U.S. soldier stuck behind after the war, and others. Metro Exodus players may recognize familiar surroundings from the following intro cutscene as the apartment found in the opening scene of that game, albeit years later, post-nuclear bombing.

Next, we have the basement scene where the character is exploring and encountering prisoners and a captor. This was a recurring theme in Exodus as well.

The Metro franchise celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2025, so it’s perfect timing for a new game. It’s been five years since the new game was announced to be in development, but meanwhile, only the VR title Metro Awakening has been the only thing to make its way to release, so Metro 2039 will be highly anticipated by fans. At one point, it was rumored that 4A Games, like so many other developers, had switched to UE, but according to the 2020 announcement, the studio will be using an updated version of its own engine.

It’s no secret that we have already started work on the next Metro game. Using everything we’ve learned from the last 15 years, we’ve set our sights even higher – the next title is being built for Gen 9 consoles and PC, with a complete overhaul of our engine and renderer to take advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing afforded by the new consoles.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
