Microsoft is continuing in its endeavor to make sure folks know that 8GB of memory is plenty for Windows 11 by removing mention of its previous 32GB recommendation for support pages. These ninja edits to Windows 11 memory recommendations come as Microsoft works towards optimizing its OS for systems with less memory. Microsoft announced last week that it was working to get Windows 11 running smoothly on systems with only 8GB of RAM (which is still double the minimum requirement). However, there are plenty of users who can report how, with either 4GB or 8GB of memory, their systems can slow to a crawl as the pagefile begins working overtime and their drive activity lights go solid once system memory has reached max usage. This being said, Microsoft has stated (via Windows Central Insider) that there are multiple teams at work in optimizing the OS for 8GB.
“We get teams together across Microsoft, we get our own team together, we instrument the various customer jobs that people want to run, and then we’re relentless at: how do we reduce the memory footprint?”
– Pavan Davuluri, Windows Chief
Meanwhile, one by one, Microsoft is getting rid of any mention that it previously made stating 16GB is “plenty” and 32GB is optimal for those playing demanding titles. A post from May (which we covered here) has gone poof, and now another, per Windows Latest, from last November is no more. It’s truly questionable if this move is born of a truly altruistic decision given how memory-hungry the OS could get with various apps in recent years, despite its 4GB minimum requirement, especially since the timing of these occurrences is happening in tandem as Microsoft launches its latest Surface devices featuring only 8GB. Regardless, it’s a win for everyone using Windows 11 at a time when RAM prices are the highest they’ve ever been. Meanwhile, Linux users continue to enjoy system configurations that often run perfectly with just 4GB and can still smile from ear to ear with satisfaction in a job well done.
