PHYSINT has escaped the chopping block thanks to a lifeline from Microsoft after the Kojima Productions title was canceled by Sony earlier this summer. Some are referring to PHYSINT, whose name is a shortened and combined version of physical intelligence, as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, the series which original propelled Hideo Kojima’s name into the 80s and 90s gaming zeitgeist. After departing Konami in 2015, he and his team at Kojima Productions have primarily been famous for their Death Stranding games. The title in production that has garnered the most media coverage is OD, a suspense-horror project that was announced in 2023 with Xbox Game Studios as the publisher. Since then, it seems that PHYSINT was also in development, but there’s been less coverage regarding the action-espionage game, which, up until now, Sony was set to publish. Kojima recently announced on social media that the title has found a new home.

“As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project. PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”

Kojima Productions already has a working relationship with Microsoft to not only develop games but also film and television projects, so this expanded partnership is just another step in nurturing that dynamic. Given the overall success that Hideo has seen with his particular vision, and a growing fanbase throughout the decades, it will be interesting to see what PHYSINT ends up becoming. Meanwhile, Sony also posted its own version of events pertaining to them letting go of the title, and while mostly similar, it seems to not exactly align with Hideo’s perspective. No doubt Sony is aware of the positive impact that the Death Stranding games have had for its consoles.

A release date for PHYSINT has yet to be announced, but more details regarding the game could be forthcoming as we approach the holidays.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
