Love, hate, or indifferent to Hideo Kojima’s games there’s still no denying that the 60-year-old video game designer famed for his often different vision of what a game can be, has made an impact on the industry during his career which began in the mid-1980s. Some of his games have received criticism for their offbeat approaches as well. It is to this end that Hideo Kojima comments about in a recent Twitter post.

Per X:

“It seems I have been acknowledged by creating games that go against the current of the times, such as “hide-and-seek” games where you sneak into a building without being detected by the enemy, or “delivery games” where you enjoy moving around in an open world, For me, the most experimental game was “defeating vampires outside your house” using actual sunlight around you. It was met with fierce opposition from the staff and even within the company. In that sense, “OD” is just as different.”

As Hideo Kojima comments on the unusual acknowledgments, it’s apparent he’s fully aware of the jokes about Death Stranding, aka post-apocalyptic Fed-Ex delivery simulator, or 2003’s Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand where players could use a gun-powered by the sun to kill vampires. The Boktai series is also noted as having similarities to another franchise he helped take to another level, Metal Gear Solid, which is referenced in the above comments as well since at the time many spy/action/military games merely focused on shooting, running, reloading, rinse and repeat formulas and stealth mechanics were at a minimum.

While the sequel to Death Stranding is still in the works OD is another project on the horizon and was recently announced at this year’s The Game Awards. It is being developed with Xbox Game Studios and filmmaker Jordan Peele and according to the above statement is purposely being designed to be as different as the aforementioned games have been.

Per the Official OD game page:

KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS and XBOX GAME STUDIOS officially announced OD at The Game Awards. World-renowned game creator Hideo Kojima has partnered with Academy Award winning filmmaker Jordan Peele, the acclaimed film director of “Get Out,” “Us,” and “Nope,” who will be one of several talented storytellers involved in the project.

“We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media,” said Hideo Kojima, Game Creator and Founder of KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
