It’s believed that as we approach the 15th anniversary of the first The Elder Scrolls game, Xbox could officially reveal the full title for The Elder Scrolls VI. It’s been widely believed that Grand Theft Auto VI —oops, how did that happen, er, hem, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel would be the next entry’s title, and now a new report from The Verge (via VGC) is adding credence to this happening. It’s claimed that Bethesda/Xbox could be planning something around the upcoming anniversary on November 11, but it might also happen sometime in December because, let’s face it, Xbox hasn’t exactly held to tight timing with various anniversaries in recent years and is more in a state of damage control to save itself, but that’s another story.
Well, back on track, and its also claimed that the next game will take players back to Hammerfall, a location seen in The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, and The Elder Scrolls Online. Bruce Nesmith who worked as lead designer for Bethesda on the third and fourth Fallout games, along with Fallout 76, has expressed hopes the next game would return to Iliac Bay so that the that the long awaiting boating mechanic would finally make its debut (something that CDPR used greatly in The Witcher 3). “Setting Elder Scrolls VI in Iliac Bay, you’re setting yourself up for a big expansion into seafaring stuff, and even if you never go under the water, think about all the things you could do on top of the water,” said Nesmith.
Returning to Hammerfall would also mean more opportunities for the developers to explore other, older lore in the franchise’s history. We still don’t have any credible clues as to when The Elder Scrolls VI will launch, but it could happen in either 2027 or 2028, given that initial development began before 2018 when it was announced at E3 and things reportedly went into full swing in 2023 following the launch of Starfield. Factor in rumors of when next-gen consoles are believed to arrive, and it would seem to be a perfect flagship launch title for Project Helix as well. Meanwhile, we can probably expect more teasers and rumors to trickle out between now and next summer.
