NVIDIA announced a couple of weeks ago that Hogwarts Legacy would be getting the DLSS 5 treatment, and we’ve only got a short time to wait until it arrives on November 5. Hogwarts Legacy launched in 2023 and, within two weeks, sold more than 12 million copies. Since then, sales numbers have exceeded 40 million copies, and it’s well known that a sequel is still in development by Avalanche Software. The developers have provided various QoL updates since release and added content as well, but now the next step will involve adding NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 technology to the game while also updating its various other DLSS features.

“In a new update launching November 5th, DLSS Neural Rendering will be added to Hogwarts Legacy, and its other DLSS technologies upgraded to their newest versions. Avalanche Software has taken advantage of DLSS 5’s SDK controls to tune the integration to maintain the artistic intent and style of the game.”

The above screenshots offer a glimpse of what to expect, but perhaps more direct comparisons are a better alternative for seeing the difference, and NVIDIA has offered 4K versions with sliders that can be viewed here and here. As NVIDIA states in its DLSS 5 brief, the new technology works in the final rendering pipeline to upgrade the game’s original rendered frame using AI neural rendering to “infuse scenes with lifelike lighting and materials”. Early criticisms of DLSS 5 focused on how it could drastically alter character models to such a degree that they might no longer resemble an artist’s original intent, but NVIDIA has said that developers are provided controls to ensure the final result is as desired. This upcoming update to Hogwarts Legacy comes as RTX Remix 1.6 launched this week, thus adding DLSS 5 to its features and giving developers the tools they need to implement in their projects.

In essence, with the launch of RTX Remix 1.6, the floodgates are now open, and it’s only a matter of when, not if, until we see a tsunami of more games getting the DLSS 5 treatment. Where Winds Meet is another title getting support for DLSS 5 and is said to get that update later in November.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
