Warner Bros. finally released its long-awaited Matrix fourthquel—The Matrix Resurrections—in theaters and HBO Max last week, and while the movie has received mixed responses thus far over its meta nature and arguably tame action scenes, its stars are seemingly quite enthusiastic about the chances of a sequel.
Those would include franchise star and Thomas Anderson/Neo himself, Keanu Reeves, who told Gamespot in a recent interview that he would be totally open to reprising the role again in what could ultimately be a new trilogy for the franchise. The original Matrix from 1999 remains one of the best projects that Reeves has ever been involved with over the course of his lengthy acting career.
“Absolutely,” Reeves told the gaming publication. “I would love it,” he said, noting that “Lana Wachowski is such a creative human being. It’s so exciting to read and be a part of anything that she creates.”
Reeves’ optimism for the franchise was echoed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who replaced Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections. The actor, who will be reprising his role as Black Manta in 2022’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, suggested that he had only scratched the surface of the character.
“I’ll say that I think that this character, you know, he’s on a journey of exploration,” he explained. “What I can say is that he is stepping into his own and he’s figuring out who he is and how he wants to exist in the world. I think that once he finds that solid hold, I think that there’s definitely an opportunity to explore now what that means for him.”
The Matrix Resurrections currently has a Tomatometer score of 66 percent and audience score of 64 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It is trailing both Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sing 2 at the box office.
