At stock speeds, Intel’s Core i5 9400 has a slight advantage here. However, when overclocked, the 3400G pushes ahead slightly and turns in a somewhat better score. It’s interesting to note that Hyperthreading helps here, but it’s primarily the clock speeds that propel the Core i5 9600K to where it is. Adding extra cores even without HT helps as seen in our 9700K test results. Adding both doesn’t double your performance, but the increase is substantial as you can see with the 9900K.

I’ve never run this test before as you can see by our lack of comparison data. All Intel CPU’s in the mainstream segment have a built-in GPU, but its not something we think about as enthusiasts as we rarely use it. However, I went ahead and fired off the quick test on our test systems to see what the result would be. As you can see, the Intel iGPU takes last place by a significant margin. Frankly, that’s what I expected here.

Cinebench R20 – Multithread

Our Ryzen 5 3400G and Core i5 9400 all come very close to one another here. The AMD CPU’s have a slight advantage, but its just that. The result isn’t too far off of Intel’s more expensive Core i5 9600K in the grand scheme of things. Certainly, from a price / performance perspective the 3400G represents more than two thirds the performance at just over half the price.

Cinebench R20 – Single Thread

In this test, the 3400G gains little from overclocking but both results are better than Intel’s Core i5 9400. No value is gained from SMT or HT and as such, clock speeds are king here within their respective architectures. The 4.7GHz Ryzen 9 3900X showcases AMD’s IPC prowess besting Intel’s most powerful offerings. Looking at price / performance, the Ryzen 5 3400G and Core i5 9400 do well in this instance.

Adobe After Effects CC – Puget Systems Benchmark

Oddly, this is another case where the overclocked Ryzen 5 3400G performs worse than it does at stock settings. Interestingly, the Core i5 9400 and Ryzen 5 3400G achieve the same result in this test. Results which are not far off more expensive processors.

Blender

Running this test on these processors was about as much fun as watching a glacier melt. It took seemingly forever and proves just how spoiled I am by faster CPU’s. In all seriousness, the Ryzen 5 3400G achieves better results than the Core i5 9400. Again, overclocking proves useless for the 3400G.

Gooseberry

Despite the thread counts of the 3400G being higher, the Core i5 9400 absolutely man-handles the 3400G. Overclocking helps in a measurable but almost insignificant way.
