NVIDIA Perf 4K-1440p

Now it is time to compare the NVIDIA video cards in the same way we compared the AMD video cards in the last two pages.  We are comparing DX11 to Vulkan’s performance in Ghost Recon Breakpoint.  We are going to separate the video cards by resolution, and only show the ones relevant to that resolution.

4K

At 4K at “Ultimate” graphics settings we have the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and GeForce RTX 2080 FE.  We definitely see a performance advantage with Vulkan versus DX11 on both video cards at 4K.  With the GeForce RTX, 2080 Ti Vulkan is 9% faster than DX11.  On the GeForce RTX 2080, FE Vulkan is 11% faster than DX11.

It seems these two video cards are not as bottlenecked as the Radeon RX 5700 XT was at 4K.  These video cards show a higher advantage with Vulkan at 4K.  However, only the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is playable in this setting.  The GeForce RTX 2080 FE is not at playable levels of performance and would require us to lower in-game settings, just like the Radeon RX 5700 XT.  But overall, you can see it is faster than the Radeon RX 5700 XT at 4K performance period.

Similar to the Radeon RX 5700 XT we also lowered the game down one setting to “Ultra” which puts us out of the red for the VRAM counter in the game.  In this way, the GPUs can flex their muscle more and not be so VRAM capacity bound.  When doing this Vulkan performance shoots up to 12% faster than DX11 on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti.  On the GeForce RTX 2080 FE Vulkan is 9% faster than DX11.

Vulkan really makes the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti shine at 4K.  It makes it able to handle these high settings very smoothly at 4K.  The GeForce RTX 2080 FE is too bottlenecked though for Vulkan to make the game playable at this setting.  We would have to go down another notch to “Very High” to be playable in Vulkan at 4K.

1440p

At 1440p we are running the game at the highest “Ultimate” setting on the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, GeForce RTX 2080 FE, and GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER.  You can see very clear advantages to performance running Vulkan over DX11 across the board.  On the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Vulkan is 22% faster than DX11.  On the GeForce RTX 2080 FE Vulkan is 13% faster than DX11.  On the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Vulkan is 14% faster than DX11.  Nothing shocking here, nice clear advantages with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti just taking off with Vulkan performance.

We lowered the game down to 1080p just like the AMD GPUs to see if removing any VRAM limitations, and making them more CPU dependent would give us higher advantages.  Sure enough, they did.  The GeForce RTX 2080 FE is 22% faster under Vulkan than DX11 now.  The GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is 21% faster in Vulkan versus DX11.  Those are some nice performance bumps.
