Ultrawide monitors have gained ground in gaming and work spaces over the last few years. They offer much larger real estate without the need for multiple displays. By eliminating that second or third display, a user can also avoid complications from surround display settings, bezels, and cabling. Monoprice has now added a new contender for a surprisingly more affordable price. At $899, it is still a higher-priced item, but it is substantially cheaper than its $1000 to $2000 counterparts. Meet “Dark Matter,” its 49-inch, 32:9 offering.

A gaming, multimedia, and productivity powerhouse, the new Dark Matter 49″ Curved Gaming Monitor features an expansive 5120×1440 Dual Quad HD (DQHD) resolution and a super ultrawide 32:9 aspect ratio for a jaw-dropping, cinematic field of view for everything from work to play. Equivalent to two 27″ 16:9 monitors side-by-side, its unique combination of resolution and aspect ratio in a single, continuous panel are ideally suited to replace dual-monitor setups without the annoyance of bezels obstructing the view. An ergonomic 1800R curvature greatly enhances immersion and reduces any potential eye strain. This 49″ Dark Matter Curved Gaming Monitor is an equally impressive performer, combining a 120Hz refresh rate and AMD FreeSync technology for blazing fast, tear-free gaming and entertainment. Samsung VA panel technology with Quantum Dot Color technology delivers a wider gamut of colors, enhanced contrast, and a quick response time. Two DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 video inputs, provide a host of connectivity options. The Dark Matter 49″ Curved Gaming Monitor features a grade A panel and is backed by our 1-Year PixelPerfect guarantee.

Dark Matter may look familiar to some because it actually features a Samsung LSM490YP02 VA panel. At a quick glance, it very much resembles Samsung’s G9 series displays. Monoprice has trimmed some options in order to lower the price. A fixed stand and lower brightness level are the most notable changes.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
