A lot of information for upcoming projects was provided in CD PROJEKT RED’s recent press conference. It seems that The Witcher is coming to mobile devices soon, but with a twist. This new game will be an augmented reality-based monster-hunting app. Think Pokémon GO, but with monsters and critters from The Witcher universe. CD PROJEKT RED president Adam Kiciński had the following to say about it:

3 years ago our friends who had already released many small mobile games under the Spokko label approached us with a bold idea. They were dreaming of bringing The Witcher Universe to a mobile augmented reality game based on geolocation. With monsters, quests, and stories hidden just around the corner. And here we have The Witcher Monster Slayer. The game is being soft-launched in New Zealand as the first step of a series of public tests. We will keep working on this promising project and continue building our studio Spokko.

He also shared thoughts about whether or not it will incorporate monetization. So far, this is something that has been absent from the Witcher franchise.

Regarding monetization – it’s too early. Of course, the game is for free but expect some monetization. We’ll test monetization as well in soft launches, but, as always, as I’ve said about multiplayer Cyberpunk, it won’t be too aggressive. Expect no paywall, no overmilking games – but of course, the game should turn a profit.

When asked about how much CD PROJEKT RED is involved with the development of this game, he answered:

Yes, I’d say that 100% is done by Spokko. Of course, we consult them, we provide them with assets and licenses and so on – but it’s their project. So we want them to be responsible for this – it’s developed at Spokko and not at CD PROJEKT.

Foul creatures roam the vast lands of the Continent — and it falls to those known as witchers to hunt them down. Set long before the time of Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher: Monster Slayer is an augmented-reality exploration game that challenges you to become an elite monster hunter. See the world around you transformed into the dark fantasy realm of The Witcher, and explore once-familiar locations now infested with dangerous beasts as you start on the path as a professional monster slayer.

Fight gigantic, life-size monsters in first-person, RPG-inspired combat — but make sure you’re properly prepared by training your character, brewing potions and oils, crafting bombs, and selecting the appropriate equipment for the battles ahead.

Experience story-driven quests that propel you through epic adventures inspired by the Witcher series, taking you deep into the heart of what it means to be an elite monster slayer.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer will be based on Google Maps and is planned to launch on both Android and iOS devices. A release announcement is expected later this year.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
