Blender Open Data Benchmark

The Blender Open Data Benchmark contains scenes for rendering and you can choose which scenes you want and the version of Blender and the API.  Firstly, this benchmark has been updated to the latest Blender version 2.90 so we are testing on the latest Blender version.  The two scenes we chose to use are the Barcelona Pavillion and Victor.  The benchmark can render using NVIDIA CUDA and also NVIDIA OPTIX.  OPTIX is NVIDIA’s specific Ray Tracing engine to take specific architecture use of RT Cores in the architecture.  Therefore, we can use both APIs and compare them.  Remember, what we are looking for here is speed, how fast it can render, the lower the time, the faster and better the performance.

In this first graph, we are using the Barcelona Pavillion scene with CUDA acceleration.  The first thing you’ll notice is that the GeForce RTX 3080 FE is a lot faster in render time, it’s a pretty big difference.  It takes only 2 minutes and 24 seconds to render, which is half the time it takes the GeForce RTX 2080 FE to render.  The RTX 3080 FE saves you half the time.  It’s also a lot faster than even the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.

In this next graph, we are looking at the Victor scene, again with CUDA.  Once again, we see a major improvement in rendering times with the GeForce RTX 3080 FE compared to every video card.  It’s close to double the performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 FE here.  It’s about 48% faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE.

In this next graph, we really flip the tables, now we are looking at the Barcelona Pavillion scene again, but this time rendering under OPTIX.  WOW, just look at the time to render here, 53 seconds, yes 53 seconds, less than a minute to render.  Remember, above on CUDA it took 2 minutes and 24 seconds.  OPTIX really speeds up performance, by a lot, we are talking like more than 3x the performance.  This time is of course much faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 FE and GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE as well.

Victor with OPTIX performance has increased as well quite a bit, from 4 minutes and 14 seconds to 1 minute and 24 seconds.  The rendering time on the RTX 3080 is still double the performance of the GeForce RTX 2080 FE as well.  It’s even faster than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FE by a full minute.

3D Rendering on the RTX 3080 is just amazing.  On the previous page, and now this one, the results are a sight to see.  We also learned that OPTIX improves performance further over CUDA by a great deal, so use that if your application supports it, like Blender.
