4K Gaming Performance

Next up, we’ll place all the chips in the middle of the table and see how the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO performs at the 4K resolution. As we know from prior testing, the 3070 class GPUs should be in the same ballpark of the RTX 2080 Ti, but this time we have a factory overclocked RTX 2080 Ti so we can expect it to work in some games at 4K and not in others. All of the games are running at the highest quality selections available sans Ray Tracing and DLSS which we will look at separately. For each game, we are using the game benchmark included with the game and reporting the average frames per second. Note that we did not report results on Watch Dogs: Legion as it simply requires more than 8GB of VRAM in order to run maxed out at 4K.

Dirt 5

In Dirt 5, much like at 1440p, the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO with 54.9 FPS hands the gold crown to the AMD Radeon RX 6800 at 70.2 FPS and the silver crown to the ASUS ROG STRIX 2080 Ti at 56.9 FPS. Overclocking MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO added an extra 2.7 FPS to allow it to grab the silver crown from the 2080 Ti.

Horizon Zero Dawn

In Horizon Zero Dawn, the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO achieved 61 FPS which is a hair under the ASUS ROG STRIX 2080 Ti at 61.3 FPS and two under the AMD Radeon RX 6800 at 63 FPS. Overclocking the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO sent it to the moon by 7 FPS to take the overall lead.

Red Dead Redemption 2

In Red Dead Redemption 2, the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO chalked up 43.1 FPS which was behind the ASUS ROG STRIX 2080 Ti at 46.6 FPS and the AMD Radeon RX 6800 at 56.3 FPS. Overclocking the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO bumped it up to 46 FPS and ahead of the AMD Radeon RX 6800. Based on the performance observed, we would not suggest maxing out image quality on any of these cards at 4K to play Red Dead.

Metro Exodus

In Metro Exodus, the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO delivered 39.8 FPS which was below the 42.3 FPS and 42.2 FPS that the AMD Radeon RX 6800 and ASUS ROG STRIX 2080 Ti turned in, respectively. Overclocking the MSI GeForce RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO moved it to the top of the pile at 44.2 FPS. Regardless, this is not a game you’ll want to play at 4K with any of these cards.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the MSI RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO flipped through 56 frames per second which fell below the AMD Radeon RX 6800’s 66 frames flipped per second. The ASUS ROG STRIX 2080 Ti fell in the middle at 59 FPS. Overclocking the MSI RTX 3070 GAMING X TRIO boosted it above the 2080 Ti at 62 FPS.
