Microsoft Flight Simulator has been a staple of flight-sim enthusiasts for decades. The latest version was launched in August and has lifted the franchise to new heights. It has been praised by reviewers, including our own Brent Justice, and is also expected to drive over $2.6 billion in hardware sales over the next three years. These achievements were only the beginning, as Microsoft has celebrated many other milestones for the new installment.

The team has a lot to be proud of. Whether it’s the 2+ million players or 3.5+ billion total miles flown, the numbers just keep climbing. This installment has also seen the quickest gain in pilots. The cherry on top happened last week when it won best sim/strategy at The Game Awards. In honor of all this, Microsoft has planned numerous events throughout the month to celebrate.

As a thank you to all of you – die-hard simmers and newcomers to flight simulation alike – we are pleased to announce that we are preparing a few surprises alongside the VR update launching on December 22. Everyone will receive a unique Microsoft Flight Simulator-themed livery for the entire launch plane fleet and simmers will be able to fly with the same cute dog-themed liveries that Rufus and Sam flew in their Pitts Special. Finally, given the time of year, the update will add real-time snow and true-to-life ice coverage to the entire planet.

Congratulations to all those involved with Microsoft Flight Simulator’s release on a job well done.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
