The latest installment of Sega’s iconic fighting game franchise, Virtua Fighter 5, is making its return on PlayStation 4 in a newly remastered package dubbed Ultimate Showdown. Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown was rebuilt using the same engine that powers Sega’s popular action-adventure beat ’em up series, Yakuza, and serves as the definitive version of the game with HD graphics and revised features such as new lighting and shaders. Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown will be released worldwide next week on June 1, 2021 exclusively for Sony’s previous-gen console.

Virtua Fighter 5, which was first released to arcade in 2006 and then to PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007, is the most recent entry in the series. While the fundamental gameplay and combat will remain the same, the graphics are being rebuilt from scratch using RGG’s Dragon Engine technology, a Sega spokesperson says. It will include new background music for every stage, a new user interface, a new opening cinematic, and new lighting and shaders.
