References in a Steam beta client update discovered by Pavel Djundik suggest that Valve may be developing a mobile controller or all-in-one console device. It follows recent news that Steam could be working on a way of bringing more games to consoles. This would not be Valve’s first attempt at bridging PC and console gaming: previously, it had tried its hand with Steam Machines.

These references hint at new console plans from Valve, suggesting that the PC gaming giant has a handheld console in the works. This console could act as a companion to a full gaming PC through Steam’s in-home streaming software and as a full-on handheld console for compatible games.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
