Confirming earlier reports, Amazon announced today that it has entered into an agreement to purchase Metro Goldwyn Mayer, the iconic studio behind the James Bond films, for $8.45 billion. The acquisition grants Amazon an extensive library of content that comprises over 4,000 film titles and 17,000 TV shows. Amazon promised that it will provide its customers greater access to MGM’s collection of films in its press release, which suggests that most of this content will be added to its Prime Video streaming service in the near future.

“The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM’s talented team. It’s very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.” – Mike Hopkins, Senior Vice President of Prime Video and Amazon Studios
