Sony claimed earlier this year that God of War: Ragnarok was not the title to Santa Monica Studio’s new God of War game.

That was a lie.

Santa Monica Studio confirmed God of War: Ragnarok and its official title today with an exciting trailer that premiered during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase. It comprises entirely of in-game footage running on the PS5.

One of the first things that God of War fans might notice is how much the sequel looks like the original, although that’s not necessarily a bad thing. God of War still looks amazing, particularly when it’s running at a rock-solid 60 FPS on Sony’s next-gen console in performance mode.

The trailer teases the natural return of Kratos and his son, Atreus, whose next challenge following the defeat of Baldur and other Aesir gods is Ragnarok, the famed event in Norse mythology that culminates in the death of notable deities such as Odin, Thor, and Loki. (The latter is interesting, as it’s revealed at the end of God of War that Atreus is actually Loki.)

Two of the major antagonists of God of War: Ragnarok appear to be Thor and Freya. The former isn’t too happy about how Kratos and Atreus slayed his kin, while the latter is similarly peeved about the death of Baldur, her son. Luckily, it looks as if Kratos will be getting some support from Tyr, his noble and giant counterpart. Tyr is the Norse god of war.

Santa Monica Studio has not shared a release date for God of War: Ragnarok, but the end of the trailer suggests that more information might be coming soon.
