HBO Max is developing a sequel to Game of Thrones, The Hollywood Reporter has learned, one that will reportedly center around Jon Snow, the fan-favorite character played by actor Kit Harington, who had appeared in every season of the original series that ended in 2019. Harington is expected to reprise his role for the new show, which has been described as a spinoff that should trace Snow’s later life following his exile from Westeros in Game of Thrones’ Season 8 finale and his journey with the Wildlings north of the Wall. The actor recently starred in Marvel Studios’ Eternals as Dane Whitman, otherwise known as the Black Knight, a superhero who wields a mystical sword. HBO’s other upcoming Game of Thrones projects include House of the Dragon, a prequel series based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel.
In Thrones’ eighth-and-final season, Jon Snow discovered his true name was Aegon Targaryen, a potential heir to the Iron Throne. In the series finale, he was exiled from Westeros and journeyed North of the Wall with the Wildlings to leave his old life behind.
This development news means there are now seven Thrones projects in the works in addition to the upcoming House of the Dragon prequel series, which debuts Aug. 21. Dragon tells the story of a civil war within House Targaryen and is set about 200 years before the events in Thrones.
