Gaming Performance Cont.

In order to test this properly, really get a good feel for it, and cover all the bases for the big picture, we decided to test 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions, all three resolutions to see from top to bottom how these CPUs affect performance games. For testing, we are using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition video card. Since we are testing all 3 resolutions, it’ll be a good mix to see where the CPU matters and where it doesn’t.

All the graphs below are not sorted, they are not sorted from fastest to slowest as in previous graphs, instead, they are simply labeled in groups by platform, from fastest CPU to least fastest CPU. As you look at performance, try to look down the column of the resolution, to see which one is faster than the other, to help your eyes see which one is faster.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Review Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 Graph

We see some big differences in Microsoft Flight Sim 2020, even at 4K. The Ryzen 9 7950X at 4K is 15% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X previous CPU. That’s pretty large at 4K. At 1440p it’s 27% faster and at 1080p it is 29% faster. This bodes big gains in performance with Zen 4 over the previous Ryzen 5000 CPUs in this game. The Ryzen 9 7950X even beats the Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPU in every resolution in this game. The Ryzen 9 7950X, as fast as it is, is beaten by the Intel Core i9-13900K at each resolution. The Intel Core i9-13900K is 4% faster at 4K, 10% faster at 1440p, and 9% faster at 1080p.

Crysis Remastered

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Review Crysis Remastered Graph

In Crysis Remastered the values are close at 4K, but we see differences at 1440p and 1080p. At 1440p the Ryzen 9 7950X is 1% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X, and at 1080p it is 11% faster. The Ryzen 5000 series CPUs again seem to fall short at 1080p, and the Ryzen 9 7950X can help there. However, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D is actually faster than the Ryzen 9 7950X at all resolutions. The Intel Core i9-13900K is also faster than the Ryzen 9 7950X at all resolutions.

Watch Dogs Legion

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Review Watch Dogs Legion Graph

In Watch Dogs Legion the Ryzen 9 7950X is exactly the same performance as the Ryzen 9 5950X at 1440p, but at 1080p it is 8% faster. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, however, does beat the Ryzen 9 7950X. The Intel Core i9-13900K also beats the Ryzen 9 7950X at all resolutions.

SUMMARY

We review the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Zen 4 CPU and put it through its paces and benchmarked synthetic and gaming scenarios at various resolutions. The CPU maintained a high-performance level, only bested in a few benchmarks by the competition slightly, but otherwise held its own as a massive upgrade from the previous generation Ryzen 9 5950X CPU. It performed well with excellent efficiency and performance per Watt and has the latest PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 feature set. Its value or price proposition is a bit high, but it is the flagship CPU from AMD and has proven its place.
