Gaming Performance

Now we come to the interesting testing we are sure you all can’t wait for, we were also anxious to get to this part and see how it all ends up for gaming performance. In order to test this properly, really get a good feel for it, and cover all the bases for the big picture, we decided to test 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions, all three resolutions to see from top to bottom how these CPUs affect performance games. For testing, we are using an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition video card. Since we are testing all 3 resolutions, it’ll be a good mix to see where the CPU matters and where it doesn’t.

All the graphs below are not sorted, they are not sorted from fastest to slowest as in previous graphs, instead, they are simply labeled in groups by platform, from fastest CPU to least fastest CPU. As you look at performance, try to look down the column of the resolution, to see which one is faster than the other, to help your eyes see which one is faster.

Dying Light 2

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Review Dying Light 2 Graph

In Dying Light 2 we find that at 4K, there are no differences between any of the CPUs, we are completely GPU bound in this game. However, when we get to 1440p we start to see some differences, and those differences are even more pronounced at 1080p. At 1440p the new Ryzen 9 7950X is offering a slight uplift from the previous Ryzen 9 5950X CPU, about 2%. This is consistent when compared to the other Ryzen 5000 CPUs. However, when it comes to the Intel Core i9-13900K we find the Ryzen 9 7950X is 2% slower than it. At 1080p the differences are even bigger. The 7950X is 2.3% faster than the 5950X, but the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can match it at 1080p. The 7950X is 3% slower than the 13900K at 1080p.

Cyberpunk 2077

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Review Cyberpunk 2077 Graph

In Cyberpunk 2077 the performance at 4K is mostly the same, there is an FPS difference here or there, but the real differences start at 1440p and then 1080p. At 1440p the Ryzen 9 7950X is 6% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X previous CPU. That is pretty significant at a higher resolution. Interestingly, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D can match the 7950X, however. The Ryzen 9 7950X also appears to be 4% slower than the Intel Core i9-13900K at 1440p. At 1080p the Ryzen 9 7950X is 10% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X, pretty significant. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D though, once again, bests the 7950X. The Ryzen 9 7950X is 4% slower than the Intel Core i9-13900K.

Far Cry 6

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU Review Far Cry 6 Graph

In Far Cry 6, we actually do see some differences at 4K present themselves. The Ryzen 9 7950X actually has a slight defect over the Ryzen 9 5950X at 4K, as it does compared to the Intel Core i9-13900K. For some reason, all four of the Zen 4 CPUs seem to be slightly underperforming at 4K. However, at 1440p and 1080p, the tables turn. At 1440p the Ryzen 9 7950X is 3% faster than the Ryzen 9 5950X, but at 1080p the 7950X is 16% faster than the 5950X. It seems the Ryzen 5000 series CPUs really struggle at 1080p in this game, all except for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D which bests the Ryzen 9 7950X! The Intel Core i9-13900K is also faster than the Ryzen 9 7950X by 11% at 1440p and 17% at 1080p.

SUMMARY

We review the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X Zen 4 CPU and put it through its paces and benchmarked synthetic and gaming scenarios at various resolutions. The CPU maintained a high-performance level, only bested in a few benchmarks by the competition slightly, but otherwise held its own as a massive upgrade from the previous generation Ryzen 9 5950X CPU. It performed well with excellent efficiency and performance per Watt and has the latest PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 feature set. Its value or price proposition is a bit high, but it is the flagship CPU from AMD and has proven its place.
