Nintendo and Illumination have released their second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a new full-length, animated feature based on one of the video game world’s leading characters and franchises.

The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, some of whom can be heard in the new trailer below, which debuted as part of a new Nintendo Direct that aired earlier today:

Nintendo and Illumination have also announced the Japanese voice actors for some of the The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s chief characters, including Mario, Princess Peach, Luigi, Bowser, and Toad:

  • Mario: Mamoru Miyano
  • Princess Peach: Arisa Shida
  • Luigi: Tasuku Hatanaka
  • Bowser: Kenta Miyake
  • Toad: Tomokazu Seki

Illumination’s previous projects include Despicable Me, which the company noted as being the most successful animated franchise in cinematic history in its about section:

Illumination, founded by Chris Meledandri in 2007, is one of the entertainment industry’s leading producers of event-animated films, including Despicable Me—the most successful animated franchise in cinematic history—as well as Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and The Secret Life of Pets and Sing films. Illumination’s soon-to-be released The Super Mario Bros. Movie will join a studio library that includes two of the top 10 animated films of all time. Illumination’s iconic, beloved franchises—infused with memorable and distinct characters, global appeal and cultural relevance—have grossed more than $8 billion worldwide. Illumination has an exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Universal Pictures. Illumination’s upcoming films in 2023 include The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Migration.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled for release in theaters on April 7, 2023.

It comes three decades after the Super Mario Bros. movie from 1993, which was live action and starred Bob Hoskins and John Lequizamo as Mario Mario and Luigi Mario, respectively, with Dennis Hopper playing King Koopa.
