Gameplay Performance at 4K

We are going to start with 4K raster gameplay performance on this page. 4K Ray Tracing will be on a separate page. Then we will have 1440p raster and Ray Tracing performance on a separate page as well. We will include FSR and DLSS performance on the same graph in the games that are supported.  We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs.  For video card comparisons we are using an AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Founders Edition, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Founders Edition, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.0

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.0 was released on October 27, 2022, on the PC and uses the IW 9.0 gaming engine. The game supports all upscaling methods, including NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA Image Scaling, AMD FSR 1.0, AMD Fidelity FX CAS, and Intel XeSS. We use the highest quality option of each. We customize every graphics setting to the maximum value for the best image quality and enable everything. We use the built-in benchmark.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Video Card 4K Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.0 Performance Graph

In Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.0 at 4K and the highest possible game settings, the new AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT performs extremely well, providing 101FPS at 4K for super smooth and playable gameplay. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT is outperforming the $300 more expensive GeForce RTX 4080 by 6%. Compared to the previous generation Radeon RX 6900 XT the new Radeon RX 7900 XT is bringing a 31% performance uplift from the previous generation. If we compare it to the GeForce RTX 3080 FE the new Radeon RX 7900 XT is 68% faster. The Radeon RX 7900 XT is also faster than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti by 33%. FSR additionally adds 37% more performance bringing the Radeon RX 7900 XT up to 135FPS, making 120Hz gaming possible at 4K in this game. At FSR performance the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 7% faster than the GeForce RTX 4080 with DLSS.

F1 2022

F1 2022 was released on June 28th, 2022 on the PC and uses Codemasters Ego engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, AMD FidelityFX, and FSR.  We are going to run the game with the highest quality settings of “Ultra High” and TAA+FidelityFX.  We will enable DLSS and FSR as needed at the Quality setting for both.  We will utilize the built-in benchmark in the Imola track, in dry conditions with a far-chasing cam.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Video Card 4K F1 2022 Performance Graph

In F1 2022 we are running at 4K with the highest in-game settings and once again the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT can pull this off rather well, giving us 153FPS for super smooth performance at 4K. This so far, is a 4K beast, at least in these two games. At 153FPS the Radeon RX 7900 XT is matching performance with the GeForce RTX 4080, a more expensive video card. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the new Radeon RX 7900 XT is only 20% faster, which doesn’t seem as big as uplift as we’d like to see generation-to-generation, but that’s what it is in this game. Compared to the GeForce RTX 3080 FE the new Radeon RX 7900 XT is 38% faster, so that is the uplift in performance coming from that GPU. Compared to the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti the Radeon RX 7900 XT is just 9% faster.

FSR adds a lot of performance in this game, on the Radeon RX 7900 XT, it improves performance by 52% bringing it to a whopping 233FPS at 4K. At this performance level, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 19% faster than the GeForce RTX 4080 with DLSS.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2.  We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing.  We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute.  For our benchmark, we are using a custom manual run-through at the end of the game hopping between rooftops, as well as free-roaming on the ground city level, as well as a forested area, in the daylight.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Video Card 4K Dying Light 2 Performance Graph

While the other two games above did very well on the Radeon RX 7900 XT, Dying Light 2 seems to give it a challenge. That said, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is allowing a playable gameplay experience at 4K and the highest in-game settings at 61FPS. At this framerate, the game is playable and enjoyable and the gameplay experience is good. This is more than can be said for the last generation Radeon RX 6900 XT, which was not playable. The Radeon RX 7900 XT improves upon the Radeon RX 6900 XT by 23% and that is just enough to put the Radeon RX 7900 XT into the realm of playability. If we compare performance to the GeForce RTX 3080 the new Radeon RX 7900 XT is 22% faster.

That performance, however, is under even the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti and especially the GeForce RTX 4080. The fact is, the RTX 3090 Ti is faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XT in this game by 8%, and the RTX 4080 is faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XT by 21%. That is very significant. FSR2 does help performance on the Radeon RX 7900 XT by a large 65% bringing it to over 100FPS, which of course is very smooth and playable. At this performance level, the Radeon RX 7900 XT with FSR2 is now on par with GeForce RTX 3090 Ti performance with DLSS, they are evenly matched when upscaling is used. However, the GeForce RTX 4080 still outperforms the Radeon RX 7900 XT by 18% upscaling to upscaling.

Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Video Card 4K Far Cry 6 Performance Graph

In Far Cry 6 the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT does well, providing 105FPS at 4K with the highest settings creating a smooth and playable gameplay experience. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 25% faster than the previous generation. Compared to the GeForce RTX 3080 the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 38% faster if you were coming from that. In this game we find the Radeon RX 7900 XT is on par with GeForce RTX 4080 performance, both are similar in performance and experience, yet the RTX 4080 is $300 more expensive. When we turn on FSR the Radeon RX 7900 XT improves performance by 35% and provides 142FPS. At this performance level it is again on par with the RTX 4080 also using FSR.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.61 and perform a long manual run-through driving in the game’s open world. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”.  This game supports DLSS and FSR.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Video Card 4K Cyberpunk 2077 Performance Graph

Cyberpunk 2077 is very interesting, first note that the Radeon RX 6900 XT was not playable at 4K and “Ultra” settings. The new Radeon RX 7900 XT does fix that, it allows this game to be playable at 4K and “Ultra” settings at just on the edge of 60FPS average framerate. The game was smooth for us and playable. At this performance level, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 38% faster than the Radeon RX 6900 XT and 35% faster than the GeForce RTX 3080 FE. The Radeon RX 7900 XT slightly edged out the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti by just 4%. It’s closer to RTX 3090 Ti performance though than RTX 4080. The GeForce RTX 4080 is 9% faster. FSR adds about 13% more performance and brings us to higher framerates into the mid-’60s making the game much better. The RTX 4080, however, with DLSS is a bit faster.

Watch Dogs Legion

Watch Dogs Legion was released on the PC in October of 2020 and uses the Disrupt game engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and enabled for testing. We use the built-in graphics preset of “Ultra” for testing. This game supports DLSS upscaling.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT Video Card 4K Watch Dogs Legion Performance Graph

In Watch Dogs Legion at 4K and “Ultra” settings, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is very playable at 82FPS and offers a smooth and enjoyable gameplay experience. Compared to the Radeon RX 6900 XT the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 30% faster and compared to the RTX 3080 the RX 7900 XT is 41% faster. The Radeon RX 7900 XT is faster than the RTX 3090 Ti by 14%. The GeForce RTX 4080 is faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XT by 6%. With DLSS, the RTX 4080 can be much faster at over 100FPS at 4K. In fact, the GeForce RTX 3080 FE can match the Radeon RX 7900 XT in performance with DLSS enabled.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT, putting it up against the competition at 4K gaming, 1440p gaming, and Ray Tracing at both resolutions, and FSR performance. We are impressed by the build, cooling, and efficiency of the video card. It packs a lot of performance into a power-efficient and cool package that can fit in any space and is an easy replacement for current video cards. Its raster performance is strong, but it does lack Ray Tracing oomph, we also were hoping for a little more uplift versus the previous generation. It has a more appealing price point than the competition, but we feel that its naming scheme and price point might be slightly mismatched, but overall it holds a very tight advantage in value versus the competition.
