4k Gaming Performance
As the RTX 4090 has shown itself to be a solid 4K card in today’s games, we will focus on its performance at this resolution with the highest quality settings enabled. We’ll address Ray Tracing on the next page, but we’ll include DLSS/FSR performance on top of the standard performance and report on the average (and in one case, median) frames per second.
Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2. We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing. We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute. We are using the built-in game benchmark. Keep in mind that recent patches to the game have made significant performance changes, thus, results are not at all comparable to earlier results.
Getting the initial party started with Dying Light 2, the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X posted a hearty median of 121 frames per second which was two FPS faster than the median RTX 4090 Founders Edition’s efforts at 119 frames per second. It significantly outran the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX and overclocking added a 6.6% boost over stock configuration.
Please keep in mind that recent patches have significantly changed the performance of Dying Light 2, thus, comparability to older datasets is not recommended.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.6 and perform a long manual run-through driving in the game’s open world. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings, mainly “Ultra”. This game supports DLSS and FSR.
Taking Cyberpunk 2077 for a spin found the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X soaking its competition at 85.9 frames per second on average. This is a 5.5% gain over the RTX 4090 Founders Edition and a good jump over the AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX. Overclocking the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X yielded just a 1.6% boost.
Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 was released in October of 2021 and uses the Dunia Engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and turned on. We utilize the “Ultra” graphics preset which sets all options to the highest game settings. This game supports FSR upscaling.
In Far Cry 6, otherwise known as one of the most fickle games to benchmark in recent history, the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X belted out 135 frames per second, a 7 FPS improvement over the RTX 4090 Founders Edition and 14 FPS over the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Overclocking the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X boosted its FPS by just one.
Watch Dogs Legion
Watch Dogs Legion was released on the PC in October of 2020 and uses the Disrupt game engine. We utilize the built-in benchmark for testing. We have the HD Texture pack installed and enabled for testing. We use the built-in graphics preset of “Ultra” for testing. This game supports DLSS upscaling.
In Watch Dogs Legion, the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X was more or less on par with the RTX 4090 Founders Edition with a 1 FPS advantage at 117 FPS. This was 20 FPS higher than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and overclocking the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X added 2 FPS to the tally.
