Conclusion
In this review, we took the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X 24G for a ride on our test bench to see how this decked-out RTX 4090 GPU would compare to the Founders Edition offering and AMD’s RX 7900 XTX offering. It commands a $150 premium over the RTX 4090 Founders Edition card, but also brings liquid cooling, RGB bling, and an impressive factory overclock to the game.
Gaming Performance
4K
At 4K settings without Ray Tracing enabled, the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X excelled across the test suite of challenging games and make very short work of them. It’s easily a great 4K gaming video card that does not have any limitations in games that are available at the time of this review.
4k Ray Tracing
Across our test suite, the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X delivered a fantastic (60+ FPS) gaming experience on each of the tested games with all the bells and whistles including Ray Tracing turned up to eleven. The only exception was Cyberpunk 2077 which averaged a mid-40s FPS which is mostly manageable when playing, though, kicking on DLSS to quality mode is able to save the day.
Power and Temp
With respect to power consumption, the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X certainly uses more power than the NVIDIA RTX 4090 Founders Edition card at 397W, but the incremental power usage appears to be going towards its AIO cooling solution for the most part.
Speaking of the cooling solution, we were quite surprised that the 240mm AIO was up to the task of cooling such a hot chip given our experience with CPU testing with 240mm AIOs. Temperatures with the default fan profile showed a cool 53.6 degrees Celsius under load and bumping fans to maximum levels for overclocking put it down into the 40s.
Overclocking
The MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X entered the match with a stout factory overclock compared to the RTX 4090, but we were able to take it well beyond that to maintain a 3075MHz observed GPU clock with 24GHz memory. This is the best overclock that we’ve seen on the 40 Series by a significant margin and the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X was able to do it while keeping the GPU stupid cool.
Final Points
To wrap things up, the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X is an absolute beast and provides a bump in performance over the Founders Edition card while keeping its cool. At a $1749 MSRP, if an RTX 4090 class card is already in your budget, then the $150 premium over the Founders Edition is absolutely worth it.
