AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D Game Performance

We are going to focus on the 4K, 1440p, and 1080p gameplay performance with the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU. The common GPU used for every CPU is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition video card. For CPU comparisons we are including the Intel Core i5-13600K, AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, and AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D CPUs. Each graph has all three resolutions on each CPU included, but the order and sorting do not change in each graph. You can look at the framerate between CPUs at each resolution. Games are in order from most recent, to least recent.

Returnal

Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled except ray tracing, we have screen-space reflections on. We use the built-in benchmark.

Returnal

Starting off in Returnal we are running the game at the highest graphics settings. The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D starts off very strong at 1080p offering the fastest performance compared to all the CPUs here. At 1080p the 7800X3D is 3% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X and 13600K. It’s 5% faster than the 5800X3D, offering more performance. At 1440p and 4K, it is on par with the other CPUs in performance.

Forspoken

Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. We are using patch version 1.12. The game supports all upscaling methods, including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, Intel XeSS, and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We use the built-in benchmark.

Forspoken

In Forspoken at the highest graphics settings, the new AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D comes out top in all three resolutions, across the board it is a win. At 1080p the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is 2% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X and 2% faster than the Intel Core i5-13600K and 4% faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. At 1440p it is 1% faster than the 7700X and 13600K and 3% faster than the 5800X3D. Even at 4K, the 7800X3D is faster than everything, 1% faster than the 7700X and 3% faster than the 13600K, and 4% faster than the 5800X3D.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II was released on October 27, 2022, on the PC and uses the IW 9.0 gaming engine. The game supports all upscaling methods, including NVIDIA DLSS, NVIDIA Image Scaling, AMD FSR 1.0, AMD Fidelity FX CAS, and Intel XeSS. We use the highest quality option of each. We customize every graphics setting to the maximum value for the best image quality and enable everything. We use the built-in benchmark.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II

In Call of Duty Modern Warfare II the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D seems to be lock-step in tune with the Ryzen 7 7700X in performance, at all three resolutions, even 1080p. This actually puts it slightly behind both the Intel Core i5-13600K and Ryzen 7 5800X3D in this game by about 1% slower. We’ve found that perhaps this game is more sensitive to clock speed, and thus the 3D V-Cache is bridging the gap between the lost clock speed on the 7800X3D compared to the 7700X in this game. It makes up for the lost clock speed, and thus only breaks even with the 7700X in this particular game. The end result is that it doesn’t seem to provide an advantage in this specific game, but the Core i5-13600K certainly does at 1080p by 2% thanks to its higher boost clocks.

F1 2022

F1 2022 was released on June 28th, 2022 on the PC and uses Codemasters Ego engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, AMD FidelityFX, and FSR.  We are going to run the game with the highest quality settings of “Ultra High” and TAA+FidelityFX.  We will utilize the built-in benchmark in the Imola track, in dry conditions with a far-chasing cam.

F1 2022

In F1 2022 we are playing the game at the highest settings, and the new AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D dominates this game at all three resolutions, even 4K. Firstly, let’s start at 1080p where the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is 6% faster than the Ryzen 7 7700X, 8% faster than the 5800X3D, and a whopping 18% faster than the Intel Core i5-13600K! That last one is amazing, can you believe that, 18% faster than the 13600K, wow. Even at 1440p, there are advantages, the 7800X3D is 3% faster than the 7700X and 6% faster than the 13600K. Even more exciting is that at 4K the 7800X3D also has a leg up on the 7700X and 13600K, matching the 5800X3D.

SUMMARY

We review the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU and focus on the gaming performance aspect of this new gaming-oriented CPU with AMD 3D V-Cache. This 8-core/16-thread CPU packs a ton of gaming performance, rivaling the competition and offering a new standard of performance for gaming. It is also the most efficient CPU there is, period, at this price range for gaming packed with tons of modern features. It offers a top-notch value for gaming that just cannot be beaten, only held back ever so slightly by its lower boost clock. It is sitting at the right price point for what it offers, and honestly you cannot get a better gaming CPU at this price range.
