An individual has come up with their own solution for the melting 12VHPWR/12V-2×6 cable issue by adding two 8-pin connectors to the 16-pin header. Reddit user DallasGrave has modded their MSI GeForce RTX 5090 by adding a PCB with two 8-pin connectors, with its wires then soldered onto the same header as the card’s 16-pin connector. Their testing, which spanned 48 hours, showed the card holding under 40°C while under a 550W load. Now, while this is under the card’s 600W maximum, most users are unlikely to use their GPU this extensively under normal working conditions. The big takeaway is that, by further spreading the load, it was monitored that temps on the wires were considerably lower than other tests have shown them reaching. The modder has said they have a ton of other testing data to process and will release it soon. The added connectors were also positioned to face the motherboard thus making cable management easier for the added wires.

This latest engineering attempt to circumvent the potential 16-pin connector meltdown shows a growing trend within the PC community to solve the issue for the notorious connector used by NVIDIA and AMD. More recently, Teclab retrofitted a Galax RTX 5090 with three 8-pin connectors directly soldered to its PCB, replacing its 16-pin connector, and showed them capable of providing over 900W of power to the card via its custom factory BIOS. However, this adaptation retains the original 16-pin connector and simply adds the two 8-pin connectors to aid in offloading the power load to more wires between the graphics card and the power supply. It will be interesting to see what other data has been gathered during testing and how this experiment may yet further inspire others to do something similar.

“The power draw and temperature across all conductors is substantially lower, about ~3A. The card was running full load for 48 hours at 550W and the wires never crossed 40c even at the joint. It is three cables total.”

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
