The Colorful GPU trade-in promo opens today for residents in China wanting to upgrade to a new RTX 40 series GPU. Trade-in programs offer users an option to upgrade their often costly graphics cards with minimal hassle but, unfortunately, are commonly restricted to various regions. EVGA had its “Step Up” program (RIP) that allowed owners to trade in their EVGA GPUs and apply a significant value towards upgrading to the next model tier. Back in February ASUS UK offered its own trade-in program for users to upgrade to an RTX 40 series graphics card and now the Colorful GPU trade-in program is doing the same for folks in China.

Beginning on May 7 owners of Colorful GeForce RTX 30 and RTX 20 series, and even GeForce RTX 1660, graphics cards can trade them in. In order to take part in the promotion customers will need to first purchase a new graphics card from Colorful’s store page on JD.com by May 21 and then they have until May 31 to express mail their old cards back to Colorful. The customers are responsible for shipping costs. Upon receiving the graphics card Colorful will review and test it and then issue a refund amount to the customer’s account. Colorful has sweetened the deal for owners of its Vulcan or iGame Neptune cards by providing up to an additional 200 RMB (~$30) for select graphics cards. This means an owner of a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti could get up to ~$1,070 for their card towards a brand new GeForce RTX 4090.

While this promotion is limited to residents of China there are undoubtedly many consumers worldwide hoping that other manufacturers will take heed of it and offer more of their own in other regions. Especially in light of the many stories of non-moving inventory of RTX 40-series graphics cards and numerous criticisms involving their pricing.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
