Gameplay Performance – 1080p Ray Tracing
We are going to focus on the 1080p gameplay performance with Ray Tracing with the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti video card on this page. 1440p will be covered on the following page. We will include DLSS and FSR performance on the same graph in the games that are supported. We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs. For video card comparisons we are using a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti FE and Radeon RX 6650 XT video cards.
Returnal
Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with an unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled. For ray tracing tests we have enabled Ray Traced Shadows and Reflections at EPIC settings. We use the built-in benchmark.

In Returnal, at 1080p we have enabled the EPIC Ray Tracing options. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti allows a playable gameplay experience at 84FPS. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is 14% faster than the previous generation GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, which was also playable at 74FPS. The AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT struggles, and is not playable, the new GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is a whopping 91% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. Enabling DLSS further improves performance by 26% bringing it over 100FPS with Ray Tracing at 1080p.
Forspoken
Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. The game supports all upscaling methods and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We are going to enable both Ray Tracing options, Shadows, and Ambient Occlusion. We use the built-in benchmark.

In Forspoken, the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti barely offers a playable gameplay experience at 1080p with Ray Tracing. It’s at 65FPS, but there were some scenes in the benchmark that dipped down into the ’30s-’40s on performance. Compared to the RTX 3060 Ti, the new RTX 4060 Ti is only 8% faster with Ray Tracing in this game. Compared to the Radeon RX 6650 XT, which was not playable, the RTX 4060 Ti is at least somewhat playable and offers 150% more performance than the 6650 XT. Utilizing DLSS really makes the game playable, however, adding 31% more performance and bringing it up to over 80FPS, making for smooth gameplay.
The Callisto Protocol
The Callisto Protocol was released in December of 2022 on the PC and is based on Unreal Engine 4. We run the game in DX12 mode with unlimited framerate, and all graphics settings enabled and at the highest graphics settings. This game supports ray tracing, and FSR upscaling only, we use FSR2 for testing. For Ray Tracing we enable Ray Traced Shadows, Ray Traced Transmission, and Ray Traced Reflections to High. We use the built-in benchmark.

In The Callisto Protocol, the new GeForce RTX 4060 Ti offers a playable experience at 1080p with all Ray Tracing options enabled at the highest values at near 70FPS average. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is 14% faster than the previous generation GeForce RTX 3060 Ti at the same settings. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is 45% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. Adding FSR improves performance by 30%.
Chernobylite Enhanced Edition
Chernobylite was released on the PC in 2021, but the free Enhanced Edition update for the game was released in April 2022. The Enhanced Edition provides a visual overhaul of the game with better textures, plus introduces tessellation and ray tracing features. It features raytraced reflections, raytraced translucency, raytraced caustics, and raytraced dynamic diffuse global illumination. The game is based on Unreal Engine 4. For our Ray Tracing test, we have enabled the Ultra Ray Tracing option.

In Chernobylite Enhanced Edition, the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is the only video card to really allow a smooth and playable gameplay experience with “Ultra” Ray Tracing at 1080p. The GeForce RTX 3060 Ti did struggle. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is 27% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, the largest performance difference in our testing. This resulted in much better gameplay in this game. The Radeon RX 6650 XT was not playable and struggled the most, Ray Tracing in this game is pretty intense with ray-traced global illumination. The RTX 4060 Ti is 295% faster than the RX 6650 XT. DLSS also adds performance by 48% and brings it up to over 80FPS with Ray Tracing on the RTX 4060 Ti.
Dying Light 2
Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine. The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2. This game supports Ray Tracing environmental effects including Ray Traced Soft Shadows, Ray Traced Ambient Occlusion, Ray Traced Global Illumination, and Ray Traced Reflections. We utilize the built-in preset option to set “HIGH-QUALITY RAYTRACING” which enables the game’s highest graphics settings plus the environmental effects explained above at the highest values. The game is run in DX12 Ultimate mode with ASYNC Compute turned on. We use the built-in benchmark.

In Dying Light 2 the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is playable at 1080p with High Quality Ray Tracing at 66FPS and offers the best performance. It is 11% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and 85% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. DLSS also adds 50% more performance and brings it to nearly 100FPS at 1080p with Ray Tracing.
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.62 and use the built-in benchmark. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings. We use the Ray Tracing Graphics Preset of either: “Ray Tracing: Low”, or “Ray Tracing: Medium” or “Ray Tracing: Ultra” as indicated. This game supports DLSS and FSR2.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the one game that is not playable on the new GeForce RTX 4060 Ti with “Ultra” Ray Tracing at 1080p. This game does require upscaling at 1080p with Ray Tracing in order to be playable. We are getting a 46FPS average on the RTX 4060 Ti, which is 17% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, but not fast enough to be playable. It is much faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT though, at 165% faster. Turning on DLSS does the trick though, and boosts performance by 75% and brings performance to a smooth and playable 80FPS. The RTX 3060 Ti is also playable with DLSS at over 60FPS.

Join Discussion →Interesting review. So looking at this card, I would want the same chip for a laptop. Because in a laptop I'm fine gaming at 1080 or 1440p and am willing to give up more with DLSS to get the performance I want as long as text is still legible.
yea actually, I'm going to keep an eye out for laptops with a 4070 series chip because that might be equivalent to this 4060ti. Right?
Laptops are a completely different ball of wax as performance depends on the laptop maker's implementation of the power/cooling delivery and wattage that they run the GPU at. I'm certain that there will be 4060 Ti based laptops that are faster than 4070 based laptops. Can't buy just based upon the GPU badge, especially for neighboring chips.
It's too bad TheFPSReview doesn't get sampled for review of laptop hardware. I'd love to see a TheFPSReview approved laptop spec.

Even with its limitations for the 8GB model, it's still more impressive than I would've expected.
As someone who is on his 3rd gaming laptop in the last 10 or so years, and constantly feeling the urge for another, I can definitely say it's possible we might see a variant of this in one soon. I haven't heard of any but the TDP is close. I could see them downclocking it a bit to get it closer to 130W where it would match the Max-P 3070 that's in my MSI GP66 Leopard, but then the real fun part is finding the manufacturer that does that. It's still a bit of a nightmare in tracking all the power/cooling variants each will do for each die. Some brag and some don't tell you squat.
The good news is that the closer we get to a non-Ti x60 the more likely it is you can find something that actually matches the desktop version. This happened with some mobile 3060s last time around and I could see it happening again with Ada.

Interesting that AMD doesn't have a direct competitor for this card as of now.
The 6750xt sells for ~$350 & the 6800 for ~$500
The 6800 would make a good comparison for the upcoming 4060 ti 16gb as they are both in the same price range
I think you should compare all 4 cards (4060 ti 8gb & 16gb) vs 6750xt & 6800, once the 4060 ti 16gb is available
10% performance delta is in the range that a decent overclock on an older card could make up.

A very true point. I had seen that in other video reviews as well, wish now I had mentioned it in the conclusion. But we will get to more card comparisons, I have a growing list of cards to compare it with. have to get through another thing first.
I think they will have a competitor eventually, I would imagine a "7600 XT" would fit the bill, what it will all hinge on is pricing and configuration. As I stated above, I've got a nice list of cards to compare the 4060 Ti with, going to be a fun time.

Of course, it'll never have the full TGP of the desktop part. However, it is the full die implementation, so more CUDA Cores than the desktop version.
Can't wait for that Arc one. I've become a big fan of it after seeing all the positive news with performance improvements from the many updates and then also the inclusion of XeSS with so many more games in the last six months. If I had the money to just throw at it I'd have a low-budget Intel build for 1080p gaming just for s & giggles.

Glancing at ebay I see my card selling around 200.... not that I would sell on ebay any more, but just for pricing purposes...
Yea, honestly if there were any local AI engines that could be accelerated with an ARC GPU I'd be asking my company for budget to try it.
Just no way I'm going to get/fund one of those Nvidia 100 AI accelerator cards for 30k or whatever they want to charge for them.
I'm shipping a 1080 Gtx over to Brent shortly... I suspect this will be one of the comparisons that we make...
