Gameplay Performance – 1440p

Though the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is geared as a 1080p gameplay card, we wanted to push it further at 1440p and see what it could do, how it would compare, and if it can offer any kind of playable gameplay experience at 1440p, especially with DLSS. We are going to focus on the 1440p gameplay performance with the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti video card on this page. We will include DLSS and FSR performance on the same graph in the games that are supported.  We will use DLSS on NVIDIA GPUs and FSR on AMD GPUs.  For video card comparisons we are using a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti FE and Radeon RX 6650 XT video cards.

Returnal

Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled except ray tracing, we have screen-space reflections on. We use the built-in benchmark.

Returnal 1440p Performance Graph

In Returnal, the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti does indeed offer a playable gameplay experience at 1440p with 73FPS. However, the previous generation GeForce RTX 3060 Ti also does this as well, and in fact, both are very close in performance. At 1440p the new GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is only 4% faster than the previous generation GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. The RTX 4060 Ti’s performance gap with the RTX 3060 Ti has narrowed as the resolution has increased from 1080p to 1440p. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is 28% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. Enabling DLSS improves performance by 27% bringing it up to 93FPS on the RTX 4060 Ti, which is only 6% faster than the RTX 3060 Ti with DLSS.

Forspoken

Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. The game supports all upscaling methods and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We use the built-in benchmark.

Forspoken 1440p Performance Graph

In Forspoken, at 1440p we find that the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti barely offers a playable gameplay experience with the highest quality settings. While we do get a 55FPS average, in a few of the benchmark scenes we saw framerates as low as the low 30s in framerate, and the game was not playable. We also find once again that the performance narrows as the resolution increases. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti is only 4% faster than the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti at 1440p. It is, however, 67% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT, which is pretty large. It does take DLSS at 1440p to smooth out gameplay, and DLSS adds 25% more performance and makes the game smooth and playable at 1440p on the RTX 4060 Ti.

The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol was released in December of 2022 on the PC and is based on Unreal Engine 4. We run the game in DX12 mode with unlimited framerate, and all graphics settings enabled and at the highest graphics settings. This game supports ray tracing, and FSR upscaling only, we use FSR2 for testing. We use the built-in benchmark.

The Callisto Protocol 1440p Performance Graph

The Callisto Protocol is playable on the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti at 1440p providing 67FPS average. Compared to the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti the RTX 4060 Ti is only 6% faster at 1440p, again lending to the performance narrowing as resolution increases trend thus far. Compared to the Radeon RX 6650 XT the RTX 4060 Ti is 42% faster. FSR adds 26% more performance to the RTX 4060 Ti and it is very playable over 80FPS.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II was released on October 27, 2022, on the PC and uses the IW 9.0 gaming engine. The game supports all upscaling methods and we use the highest quality option of each. We customize every graphics setting to the maximum value for the best image quality and enable everything. We use the built-in benchmark.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II 1440p Performance Graph

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II is playable at 1440p on the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti at maximum game settings at 81FPS average. In this game, we see a pretty big jump over the RTX 3060 Ti, 21% which follows the 1080p performance in this game as well. This puts it 29% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. DLSS also improves performance further to over 100FPS increasing performance 41%.

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition

Chernobylite, based on Unreal Engine 4, was released on the PC in 2021, but the Enhanced Edition update for the game was released in April 2022. The Enhanced Edition provides a visual overhaul of the game with better textures, plus introduces tessellation and ray tracing features. It features raytraced reflections, raytraced translucency, raytraced caustics, and raytraced dynamic diffuse global illumination. It supports upscaling, and we use the highest quality. We use the built-in benchmark.

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition 1440p Performance Graph

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition at the highest game setting is playable at 1440p on the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti at 100FPS, so the game is very smooth. In this game, the RTX 4060 Ti is 10% faster than the RTX 3060 Ti which is also playable. Compared to the Radeon RX 6650 XT it is 57% faster. DLSS further improves performance by 36% up to 135FPS.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC and uses Techland’s C-Engine.  The game supports Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR2.  We use the built-in preset to set “HIGH QUALITY” which sets the highest game graphics, without Ray Tracing.  We manually enable DX12 and ASYNC Compute.  We use the built-in benchmark.

Dying Light 2 1440p Performance Graph

Dying Light 2 is graphically intense, but the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti manages to play this game smoothly at maximum settings at 1440p. Then again, so does the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, and in fact the performance between the two video cards is extremely close. It was already close at 1080p, but it is even closer at 1440p, only a 2% difference. This puts it 34% faster than the Radeon RX 6650 XT. DLSS also adds more performance, 47%.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.62 and utilize the built-in benchmark. We test using the Graphics Preset option to set graphics settings to “Ultra”.  We utilize the highest quality upscaling.

Cyberpunk 2077 1440p Performance Graph

Finally, we are surprised to see Cyberpunk 2077 actually playable at 1440p with “Ultra” settings without needing to engage upscaling. However, once again, the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti was also playable in the last generation. The GeForce RTX 4060 Ti offers only an 8% performance advantage. Frankly, you get more of a performance advantage just engaging DLSS on either the RTX 4060 Ti or RTX 3060 Ti which takes it to over 70FPS at 1440p with upscaling.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition and tested it at 1080p, 1440p, Ray Tracing, DLSS and DLSS 3 performance. This video card is aimed at the 1080p gameplay experience, and it can even offer a playable 1440p experience, especially with DLSS. Its gaming performance falls shy of the previous generation, with a minimal performance gain, offering mainly a feature upgrade in terms of DLSS 3 and AV1, along with better Ray Tracing. It is built very well, and holds the crown as the most power efficient GPU at this price point. Overall, it is marred by a higher than expected price point, for the performance delivered, and bandwidth constraints presented, in regards to longevity for future gaming performance.
