How much slimmer is the new PS5 compared to the older model? Not much, it seems, as Dave2D has shared a teardown video that shows off the two systems sitting side by side, revealing a new design for the “Slim” that is said to be “not that much smaller” than what Sony came up with for the original PS5 years ago. This is bad news for those who were expecting something along the lines of the PS2 Slim, which remains fondly remembered for what was truly a thin design, although Dave2D did note that there are some decent changes that can be found under (and above) the hood, including a new fan with a 19-blade design, what appears to be more cooling pipes, and an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive that is very easy to install or unplug. The horizontal stand apparently “sucks” though, while LinusTechTips, who also got his hands on a PS5 Slim, learned that the new system features the same noise levels as the older version and isn’t any quieter.

…the size of the new PS5 is not actually that much smaller like when you compare them side by side it’s like a little bit smaller but also if you had the dbrand plates like the dark plates the size difference is even less noticeable but I imagine dbrand being dbrand is going to make some kind of crazy aesthetically pleasing shell for the new PS5 as well uh the other thing in the Box it doesn’t come with the vertical stand like the original PS5 it comes with a horizontal stand which I think sucks it’s a pair of these plastic feet that you slot into the side or I guess like the bottom of the PlayStation

…the original PlayStation 5 does a great job of making sure that all the noise is directed toward the back of the unit, rather than toward the user. And that continues here, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t some differences. Both were so quiet at idle and in the menu that they were below the noise floor of our EMC chamber, which makes sense since the fans were barely spinning, if at all. And in games, neither of them exceeded 35 decibels. But the characteristics of that sound were slightly different, with the original PS5 having kind of an even emission of sound toward the back of the unit, and the Slim being ever so slightly quieter overall, but louder on the side of the optical drive. So if for whatever reason you keep your PlayStation 5 kind of behind you and to this side, no, this side, there we go, you may prefer the OG rather than the Slim.
