James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne in Remedy Entertainment’s popular neo-noir shooter games (and, more recently, Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2), has died at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer.

TMZ, which appears to have been the first publication to share the news, confirmed that the actor passed away yesterday, and while the circumstances weren’t great, he was, at the very least, among loved ones:

A rep for the star tells us McCaffrey passed away Sunday surrounded by friends and family. We’re told he’d been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, and that he ultimately succumbed to the disease.

“One of Dick Wolf’s proteges (Swift Justice), McCaffrey went on to a successful 35 year career in television and film,” reads a statement from McCaffrey’s rep. “Trained at the Actor’s Studio, he never lost his love for creating characters; however, his good looks often pushed him toward leading man roles.”

Aside from voicing Max Payne, McCaffrey is also known for his roles in various shows, including Law & Order: SVU, Swift Justice (as noted above), and Rescue Me, where he played one of the firefighters with Ladder Company 62, James Xavier “Jimmy” Keefe.

“I’m heartbroken to hear the sad news of James McCaffrey’s passing,” Remedy’s Sam Lake wrote today in a tweet that includes what appears to be BTS photos of him with the actor. “We worked together for more than 25 years. He was a lovely man and a dear friend. He was a key part of the Remedy family. He was a brilliant actor. No one could do what he did better than him.”

“James was Max Payne, Thomas Zane, Zachariah Trench and finally Alex Casey,” Lake added. “I had the honor of sharing Max Payne’s role and Casey’s role with him. He was a joy to work with. I will cherish his memory and I miss him. My deepest condolences to his family. Rest in peace, Jim.”

McCaffrey is survived by his wife Rochelle Bostrom and daughter Tiernan, TMZ noted in its coverage.
