AMD Ryzen 8000 Series Processors
On this page, we will take a look at AMD’s new announcements for its AMD Ryzen Client Processor update. 2023 was a busy year for AMD, launching new AMD Ryzen 7000 series Zen 4-based CPUs. It all started actually in September of 2022 when AMD launched its AM5 platform with the Ryzen 9 7950X, Ryzen 9 7900X, Ryzen 7 7700X, and Ryzen 5 7600X CPUs. The Ryzen 9 7950X had a launch MSRP of $699, while the Ryzen 9 7900X had a launch MSRP of $549, the Ryzen 7 7700X had a launch MSRP of $399 and the Ryzen 5 7600X had a launch MSRP of $299.
This was then followed up by the launches of the Ryzen 9 7950X3D and Ryzen 9 7900X3D in February of 2023 for $999 and $599 respectively. This was then followed by the Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU in April of 2023 for $449 MSRP. Then in May of 2023, we got three more Zen4 CPUs, the Ryzen 9 7900 with an MSRP of $429, the Ryzen 7 7700 with an MSRP of $329, and finally the Ryzen 5 7600 with an MSRP of $229. That’s a lot of CPUs! And AMD isn’t done yet with Zen 4!
Today, AMD is announcing two things here, its AMD Ryzen 8040 Series Processors for mobile, in laptops, and then also announcing its Ryzen 8000G series desktop APUs. Let’s start with a recap of the AMD Ryzen 8040 Series Processors.
AMD Ryzen 8040 Series Processors









The AMD Ryzen 8040 Series Processors launched in December 2023 at the AMD Advancing AI event, so this is just a quick recap. The Ryzen 8040 Series Processors combine AMD’s Zen 4 architecture and RDNA 3 graphics with a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that is 60% more powerful than the previous models on board for performance in the mobile space.
AMD’s graphs point to the Ryzen 7 8840U providing up to a 79% performance improvement over Core Ultra 7 155H in AI processing using the new NPU. The Radeon 700M graphics on board can also provide a nice bump to performance in popular AI applications. AMD also shows off gaming performance, with the Ryzen 7 8840U providing an uplift, even as much as 60% over the Core Ultra 7 155H with Arc Graphics. Productivity benchmarks also show a performance uplift and efficiency is noted.
AMD Ryzen 8000G Series Processors
For PC enthusiasts and DIY’ers, you are probably here because you want to see all about the new Ryzen 8000G APUs AMD is going to launch. These are really exciting, because we finally have an upgrade to the “G” line of AMD APUs, and it’s been a long time coming indeed.
Let’s take a little trip down memory lane. The AMD Ryzen 7 5700G and AMD Ryzen 5 5600G were launched in April of 2021 on the AM4 platform based on the Zen 3 architecture, but with older Vega graphics. That’s right, it’s been about three years since we have seen a new APU on the desktop from AMD. The Ryzen 5000G series, based on Zen 3 used at the time, uses aging AMD Radeon Vega-based graphics, not even GCN and not even RDNA, and only with PCIe Gen3 support. It is ancient, compared to the current generation we have today. We have been hurting for new APUs from AMD and finally, AMD is upgrading APUs in 2024!







Since the Ryzen 8000G series APUs are based on RDNA 3 Radeon 700M series graphics, it can fully support AMD’s Hypr-RX and Fluid Motion Frames for improved smoothness in games. AMD claims playable performance in games with the Ryzen 7 8700G at 1080p and Low details at 60FPS+, especially with FSR enabled. Naturally, you can still equip a discrete graphics card with an APU when ready. This should deliver an acceptable gameplay experience in small form factor PCs.
AMD estimates big gains compared to the integrated graphics on the Core i7-14700K for comparison, anywhere from 1.1x up to 4x as fast. In the graphs, we can see that AMD is estimating anywhere between a 15%-20% difference in performance between the 8600G and 8700G, based on the game. The Ryzen 8700G may be so good in fact, that it can rival a GeForce 1650 discrete graphics card on performance.




One of the really neat facts about the Ryzen 8000G series desktop APUs, since they use Radeon 700M graphics, is that they are all built with the NPU on board for improved AI performance.

Here are the speeds and feeds on the AMD Ryzen 8000 G-Series Processors above. AMD will be launching all of these available on January 31st. You will see the AMD Ryzen 7 8700G at the top-end which is an 8-core/16-thread APU at up to 5.1GHz boost clock and 65W TDP with the highest CU count of Radeon 780M graphics on boards and the MSRP will be $329 at launch. Next down the list will be the AMD Ryzen 5 8600G which is a 6-core/12-thread APU that will boost up to 5GHz and also have a 65W TDP with a cut down Radeon 760M graphics on board and the MSRP will be $229.
Next, you will find the AMD Ryzen 5 8500G which is also a 6-core/12-thread APU that will boost up to 5GHz and also have a 65W TDP with a more cut-down Radeon 740M graphics on board and the MSRP will be $179. Finally, to round out the bunch you will find the AMD Ryzen 3 8300G which is a 4-core/8-thread APU that will boost up to 4.9GHz with a 65W TDP and the same Radeon 740M graphics on board, MSRP TBD. That’s right, they are bringing back the Ryzen 3! It just happens to be in the APU form, and also mainly in OEM systems or partner systems, and in a few months.
AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Processors for AM4
It doesn’t stop there either, AMD is continuing to support AM4 to this day, with some new CPU launches, which is just incredible, to be honest. We haven’t seen this kind of backward CPU launch once a new platform is launched.





AMD is announcing the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D to exist on AM4, officially. Now remember, these are Zen 3-based CPUs, not the newer architecture, and do use DDR4 not DDR5. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D has been one of, if not the, most exciting and meaningful CPUs for gaming ever. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D has extended the AM4 platform for a lot of gamers, and the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D may give gamers longevity on the platform as well. The AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D is an 8-core/16-thread CPU just like the 5800X3D, but it tops out at a 4.1GHz max boost clock with a 105W TDP. It has 100MB of total Cache on board. The pricing will be $249 MSRP. AMD sees this competing with the likes of the Intel 13600K and outperforming it on gaming performance.
It doesn’t stop there either, AMD is also announcing the AMD Ryzen 7 5700 Zen 3 AM4 CPU. This is also an 8-core/16-thread CPU with a max boost of 4.6GHz and only 65W. It lacks any 3D V-Cache and has a standard 20MB cache but does come with the AMD Wraith Spire cooler in the box. AMD places it against the Core i5-12400F as competition.




And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also going to be an AMD Ryzen 5 5600GT which is a 6-core/12-thread Zen 3 AM4 APU that boosts up to 4.6GHz at 65W TDP and has AMD Radeon graphics built-in. Then there will be the AMD Ryzen 5 5500GT which is a 6-core/12-thread APU that boosts to 4.4GHz with AMD Radeon Graphics built-in, both of these come with coolers in the box. These could be potential upgrades over the 5600G. You can see the pricing above, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D will be $249, the Ryzen 7 5700 will be $175, the Ryzen 5 5600GT will be $140 and the Ryzen 5 5500GT will be $125. It is nice to finally see some budget options!

The 5600X3D was released mid last year.
Just checked, thought I was losing the plot, looks like it was just a US release.
No love for this side of the pond.
The main buzzkill with the G-series is that they have less L3 cache than even the single CCD... 'desktop'-oriented parts? Not even sure how to differentiate them easily.
They should have lower memory latency due to being monolithic, and if they follow the pattern of the 5000G-series, they may support higher memory speeds as well, especially when it comes to overclocking beyond base specs, so maybe the smaller L3 cache isn't as big of a hit.
Oh, and that US$329 intro price for the top APU SKU is a bit hard to swallow, IMO.
I'm not sure what the cost of the Meteor Lake Core ultra line are. Google doesn't tell me shit.
Can't really compare the mobile prices since OEMs don't pay MSRP, and we don't know what the desktop MTL SKUs are going to look like. Other than that they're going to need a new socket and chipset to back them up.
Though I don't expect a significant departure from Intel.
It wasn't just exclusive to the US, it was exclusive to one specific retailer: Micro Center.
Considering just how well Microcenter did at keeping stock on hand for shoppers during the whole covid lockdown years... if I had to pick one vendor to sell computer accessories or components through in the US... it would be Microcenter.
I visited best buy once during lockdown looking for an xbox controller. It was a barren wasteland. Like Fry's was before they finally gave up the ghost and went under. I'm thinking Best Buy is still around and ok... but a shell of their former selves. While Microcenter managed their inventory and purchasing... and is doing better than ever.
That's just an outside view in mind you. I mean Best Buy was the only way to get a founders edition 40 series for a while.

They are only good at it because you have to drive in to one to get anything, and they are only located in a small handful of areas.
And one of those is right down the highway from me. So I'm sure that colors my impression of them. Also for the covid lock down against all odds that worked out in their favor.
Not the ones in my area. People were lining up outside of the stores before opening, ready to jump delivery trucks, and even getting into fights. Whenever I rolled through the closest Micro Center, the GPU shelves were always empty.
Yes GPU's were being run on... but that's a given and driven by insane demand for various reasons and scalpers going for profit.
