Sony and Honda brought their new AFEELA EV to CES this week, but instead of having an employee drive it onto the stage, Izumi Kawanishi, Representative Director, President, and COO of Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), used a PS5 DualSense controller instead, showing off the software capabilities of the car.

Event highlights:

  • “SHM aims to revolutionize how people move by redefining the relationship between people and mobility.”
  • “SHM aims to realize AD/ADAS through the use of a number of sensing devices and AI in mobility.”
  • SHM has partnered with Epic Games to develop new entertainment and gaming features “utilizing virtual space.”
  • SHM has partnered with Microsoft to develop a conversational personal agent based on Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.
  • SHM has partnered with Polyphony Digital (Gran Turismo) to “develop vehicles that fuse the virtual and the real,” combining its simulation technology with the development of its vehicles.
  • Creators and developers can freely develop applications and services that run on AFEELA as part of SHM’s open-mobility development environment.

Quotes:

  • “Generative AI is a new canvas that is amplifying human creativity and creating opportunities for creators and designers to completely transform the in-vehicle experience. We are proud of our collaboration with Sony Honda Mobility and excited to see their innovative use of Azure AI technologies and their ability to build with confidence knowing Microsoft Azure is providing a trusted platform as the AI landscape and mobility industry evolves. As these new technologies come forward, safe and responsible AI will continue to be a top priority for both organizations,” said Jessica Hawk, Corporate VP of Data, AI, and Digital Applications Product Marketing at Microsoft.
  • “We are thrilled to work with Sony Honda Mobility to deliver world-class mobility experiences that lead the way not only in connected visual communication but also social entertainment,” said Kim Librei, CTO at Epic Games.

…Kawanishi took the stage to unveil the evolved prototype for the first time. In his speech, he introduced its progress on two aspects – “AI for ADAS” and “Mobility as a Creative Entertainment Space” – under the theme of “Redefining the relationship between people and mobility”.
