Sony is expanding its collection of PlayStation accessories with new cover plates that will allow PS5 Slim owners to dress their consoles up in something other than white. According to photos that were taken at CES, at least three will be available, all of which appear to be inspired by the Deep Earth Collection, a family of new metallic colorways that Sony launched for the original PS5 and the DualSense controller in September.

Highlights:

  • Metallic colors, comprising Volcanic Red, Cobalt Blue, and Sterling Silver
  • All plates are matte, as opposed to the original’s glossy/matte mix
  • PlayStation symbols on drive side (bottom)
  • Cover plates will start at $54.99 ($20 less than PS5 versions)
  • Release date is unknown, but more details are expected be shared on the official PlayStation blog soon
  • Black cover plates for the PS5 Slim are also in development

Quotes:

  • “While crafting this new collection of DualSense controller and PS5 console cover colors, we drew inspiration from the beautiful and powerful hues found in the depths of planet Earth. We elevated the colors by adding a metallic finish for a touch of sophistication,” PlayStation’s Satoshi Aoyagi said in September.
  • “Volcanic Red boasts a rich blazing red tone. Cobalt Blue, on the other hand, presents a deep shade of blue with intriguing hints of purple. Lastly, Sterling Silver showcases a classic aesthetic with a subtle blue undertone,” explained Leo Cardoso.

Additional coverage:

Sony’s playing it fairly safe with the colors here, but they all looked pretty eye-catching on the show floor. This red is certainly more “red” than the cosmic red accessories for the original PS5. Personally, I think I’m partial to the silver; it evokes some of that original PlayStation nostalgia. Black sideplates are also in the works.

It’s probably just the very bright show floor lighting that’s responsible for this, but when combined with the optional vertical stand, these colors do give off a neat reflection.
