Deadline has learned that Paramount has hired Toby Haynes Star Wars: Andor, Black Mirror) to direct a new Star Trek movie. Plot details are unknown, but the movie is said to be another origin story, one that is being developed with the intention of expanding the Star Trek universe. Haynes’ credits include directing duties for six episodes of Andor, Disney and Lucasfilm’s streaming series centered on the Star Wars: Rogue One character, and two episodes of Black Mirror for Netflix.

Highlights:

  • Origin story that takes place “decades” before J.J. Abrams’ 2009 film
  • Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) is writing the script
  • J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing
  • Movie is separate from Star Trek 4, the next mainline film, which remains in development at Paramount
  • Star Trek Beyond, the last film, came out in 2016

…the brand remains as strong as its ever been behind popular Paramount+ shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds earning strong reviews and solid ratings. The Brian Robbins led-Paramount saw an opportunity to build on that popularity with multiple films in development the same way its streaming arm had multiple shows going at once.
