The new Patriot Viper PV553 comes in an M.2 2280 form factor and will be available in 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB capacities and uses 232-layer TLC NAND. A built-in cooling fan and heatsink combined with thermal pads and an aluminum casing are said to reduce temperatures by up to forty percent. If operating conditions still manage to reach higher temperatures the drive does also include a thermal sensor for thermal throttling to prevent damage to it. A limited 5-year warranty is included but users are advised against removing its active cooling solution as that will void the warranty. Other features include data encryption, error-correcting technology, and S.M.A.R.T. command functionality.

As a child of the 70’s I was part of the many who became enthralled by the video arcade invasion of the 1980’s. Saving money from various odd jobs I purchased my first computer from a friend of my dad, a used Atari 400, around 1982. Eventually it would end up being a lifelong passion of upgrading and modifying equipment that, of course, led into a career in IT support.
