Gaming Performance Go-Me

For our testing, we will focus on the 1080p gameplay experience for every game. However, we will test at several different game quality preset settings, from Low to Medium, to High to Ultra as the performance demands. This will give us a clear picture of how the Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G up and down game quality settings. We will also turn on the highest quality mode of FSR upscaling in the games that support it, at each graphics setting. This means we will have several graphs, per-game, to show and we will divide them up in alphabetical order on each page as you go through the review.

Godfall

Godfall Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

Godfall was released in 2020, so this represents a bit of an older game at this point, but the game does have a lot of moving graphics and effects on screen at one time. We are starting at the “Medium” quality for this one since it ran very well and the game is playable with lower framerates. At Medium quality, the 8700G is playable at 60FPS without upscaling, but the 8600G needs FSR to be playable at Medium settings. The 8700G is 110% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 70% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 23%. FSR does add to performance and for the 8700G it makes it 29% faster and for the 8600G it is 40% faster.

At “High” quality this game is not playable without FSR, for both the 8700G and especially the 8600G. The 8700G is 112% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 84% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 15% and FSR adds 30% more performance.

Godfall Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

Trying to play this game on Epic quality is not really the best experience. The 8700G is 123% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 91% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 17%. FSR adds about 33% more performance to the 8700G.

Hitman 3

Hitman 3 Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

Hitman 3 came out about 3 years ago, but can still be demanding on the higher settings for these APUs. We started at the “Medium” setting above, and you can see that the 8700G and 8600G are playable, and especially with FSR they have playable framerates at medium quality. The 8700G is 127% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 92% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 18%. FSR doesn’t add much to performance at this quality setting.

Turning this game up to “High” quality settings is still viable, especially on the Ryzen 7 8700G without upscaling. With the 8600G, using FSR can bring it up to 60FPS. The 8700G is 134% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 105% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 14%. FSR adds about 10% more performance.

The performance starts to struggle at “Ultra” quality, especially on the 8600G. However, the 8700G is still playable, especially with FSR enabled. The 8700G is 127% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 99% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 14%. FSR adds about 11% more performance.

Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

We are running the original Metro Exodus game here, which came out in 2019, there is an Enhanced Edition but that only runs Ray Tracing, so we are not using it. Metro Exodus is a very demanding game for these APUs to test with. This game doesn’t support FSR, so we are just using native resolution. At the “Low” quality preset, this game is very demanding still, and only the 8700G is only barely playable. The 8700G is 108% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 87% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is just 11%.

Metro Exodus Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

Turning the game up to “Normal” preset definitely is not playable, except again only barely on the 8700G. The 8700G is 107% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 82% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 14%.

Metro Exodus Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

Now we are into unplayable territory, we find the 8700G is 142% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 86% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 31%.

Metro Exodus Ryzen 7 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 5700G Game Performance Graph

Just to round out the benchmarks, at “Ultra” settings the 8700G is 111% faster than the 5700G and the 8600G is 80% faster. The difference between the 8700G and 8600G is 17%.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the AMD Ryzen 8700G and Ryzen 5 8600G versus the Ryzen 7 5700G APUs in integrated graphics (iGPU) performance in 17 games at 1080p, various graphics settings, and FSR. We found the 8700G and 8600G to be substantial upgrades over the previous generation in gaming performance, allowing playable performance in modern games. Based on Zen 4 and the new RDNA 3 graphics architecture, these APUs support the latest features for gaming. The pricing could use a bit of a nudge down, but otherwise they offer a great value for combining CPU and on board GPU.
