Madame Web, the new superhero suspense thriller that traces the origins of powerful psychic Cassandra “Cassie” Webb, is the worst-performing Spider-Man spin-off film from Sony yet, according to opening weekend figures that have been published online. The movie, which cost “$80 million to produce and tens of millions more to promote and put in theaters,” has a 13% Tomatometer score at the time of this writing—something that would imply it’s even worse than Morbius, which premiered in April 2022 to bad reviews but still managed to open at $39 million domestically.

Opening figures:

  • Domestic: $15,350,000
  • Europe, Middle East, and Africa: $2,900,000
  • Latin America: $2,900,000

Total gross as of this writing:

  • Domestic: $26,205,000
  • International: $25,700,000
  • Worldwide: $51,905,000

Top critics are saying:

  • “It doesn’t take clairvoyance to see this franchise has no future.”
  • “In its sheer mind-boggling awfulness, it represents the death of the superhero genre, the burning of the superhero genre to the ground and then the returning in the middle of the night to piss on the superhero genre’s ashes.”
  • “Not quite Morbius bad, but still a bottom of the barrel moment for Sony.”
  • “Ah, well. On to the next Sony project, August’s heavily delayed Aaron Taylor-Johnson vehicle Kraven the Hunter. Let’s see if that one can make a lick of sense.”

Synopsis:

In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realizes she can use that insight to change it. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies…if they can all survive a deadly present.
