Dragon’s Dogma 2, Capcom’s latest fantasy RPG, will be unlocking later today for many regions, and one thing that players might find themselves doing in the game’s lands of Vermund and Battahl is killing as many NPCs as possible, according to various discussions online that include one on the r/DragonsDogma subreddit where prospective players are calling for a list of “junk NPCs we are free to murder.” The demand comes on the heels of a statement from Capcom that explains how each character in Dragon’s Dogma 2 requires a “large amount” of CPU usage, which could affect the performance of the game depending on the hardware used and the amount of NPCs that are around.

Capcom revealed:

  • “In Dragon’s Dogma 2, a large amount of CPU usage is allocated to each character and calculating the impact of their physical presence in various areas.”
  • “In certain situations where numerous characters appear simultaneously, the CPU usage can be very high and may affect the frame rate.”
  • “We are aware that in such situations, settings that reduce GPU load may currently have a limited effect; however, we are looking into ways to improve performance in the future.”

Players are saying:

  • “…the way NPCs are handled is theorized to be very taxing on your CPU, killing off NPCs should boost your performance…”
  • “This idea is wild. The optimization is so bad that we have people wanting to commit mass genocide for more fps.”
  • “If we’re aiming for the best performance, then can’t optimize just the men, but the women and children too…I can already count 15+ fps increase.”
  • “execute fps 66”
